The cow and farmer analogy at the beginning of Jonatha's response is flawed, since it assumes that the use of the milk by the store owner is in no way beneficial to the farmer. The relationship between artists and radio, however, is just such a mutually beneficial arrangement. Here's a better way to look at the whole thing - again, through the eyes of our enterprising young dairy pusher. A store owner samples milk from a number of farmers' cows. He or she finds one sample to be particularly tasty and therefore asks the farmer if s/he can give a taste of that milk to a whole crapload of her friends, who in turn, might themselves be willing to purchase a whole crapload of the especially tasty milk, which ultimately benefits the farmer.

Note that we're dealing with a "taste" of the milk, as Internet radio broadcasters aren't actually providing people with a "free" viable product. It is, in fact, a sample of that product. Believe it or not, there was a time when such a service was deemed so valuable to artists and labels, that they were willing to actually pay the radio stations for it. Yes, my head is about to explode, too.
