Too soon for football?
July 21st, 2008 by Eric Snider in SportsBucs camp starts Saturday and I don’t care.
Well, I care a little, I guess, but not like I used to in the past. I picked up the sports section today and there was the obligatory story about keen areas of competition expected in camp — running backs, receivers, etc. — and I barely skimmed it.
Last year, and the years before, I would’ve been all over it.
Why? The Rays, man.
Until this year, I, like so many Tampa Bay sports fans, slogged through late June and July — with the NBA Playoffs over and our baseball team already 20 games under .500.
Football training camp represented a rebirth. Throw me a crumb about the battle for who’s going to return kickoffs, or the human interest story on the 127th kid who’s overcome adversity, and I am on it.
Hey, I’ll probably still read those stories, but they won’t be the lifeline they’ve been before. And I’ll read the Rays stories first.

I’m for one really excited that football is almost back. I am happy and all for the Rays, I just can’t get that into baseball.
Too many games that take too long to play out without enough action. At least for me anyway. I’ve tried watching at least a dozen or so games this year and apart from 10 second here or there or possibly the last inning or so of a series – it just doesn’t do it for me.
In a way I’ve tried getting into hockey and now baseball I think as a bookmark for the place where football goes. As a now nine-year fan, nothing has worked. Not even AFL.

I’m with you, Eric.
What I have noticed is that for the first time, it is JULY, and I am NOT complaining that football season is still too far away.
Oh, I realize that TC begins soon – I expect my season tix to show up any day.
It’s just that the Rays have me distracted just enough. For once, I’m not bored out of my skull from 2 months of “nothing.”
It’s all kinda cool.
Go Rays!

Love the Rays. Went last night and watched them get their heads handed to them 8-1 by the A’s.
Bring on the pigskin!
