Plaza Midwood TV

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Local real estate company Savvy & Co. Real Estate has been filming videos about Charlotte neighborhoods for a few months now and putting them on YouTube. The videos were obviously created to help the company sell homes, but they offer pretty interesting snapshots about sections of town. Check out this one that was created about Plaza Midwood:

Boring but beautiful

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Singer/songwriter Nikki Jean (catch her singing the hook on rapper Lupe Fiasco’s song “Hip Hop Saved My Life”) posts really boring video blogs on a daily basis. Her newest one is about taking baths. Yawn, right? But, damn, she looks good. I’m in love! And she can sing, too.

Old tunes on YouTube

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I used to think YouTube was just a site where I could find stupid videos, but recently I discovered that it’s actually a great place to find old, often-obscure songs.

Honestly. Just visit the site and type in the name of a song — chances are someone posted a video or still image along with the song you’re seeking.

For example, I heard a song by an artist named Sylvia on a 1970s-era episode of Soul Train this weekend. (Yes, I still watch Soul Train!) I liked the song, so I did a search on YouTube and found stuff like this:

Yeah it’s cheesy. Sue me. Anyway, try it out see what you find for yourself.

What’s Machinima?

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Machinima is a relatively new art form sweeping through  the subcultures of America.

But what the hell is it exactly?

According to the pop culture site Newsarama.com,  Machnima is:

movies, short and long form, created using an existing 3d environment; most often with video games used as the base. The most famous Machinima (pronounced muh-sheen-eh-mah) is probably an ongoing series of web shows and movies called Red vs. Blue. These productions are filmed using Halo 2 (and now 3), then dubbed over with full scripts to tell the story.

In case that explanation doesn’t give you a clear picture on Machinima, here’s a look at one of the films:

Jamie Carroll at Whisky River

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Last night, 96.9 The Kat hosted its Next Big Star contest at Whisky River, where four finalists competed to open for Kenny Chesney when he comes in concert later this month. Check out this video of Jamie Carroll of the finalists, singing “I Don’t Wanna Know.” Out of all the performers, he was my favorite. In fact, I might even be in love with him now (just kidding, in case there’s a easily jealous significant other).

Paris Hilton responds to John McCain ad

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

So apparently, John McCain’s people released an ad, comparing Barack Obama’s celebrity to that of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Paris Hilton, with her famous-for-no-real-reason self, decided to respond.
