Moodiness gone Casio-cute

As band names go, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone serves an unusual purpose — it’s brutally accurate.

Founding (and only) member Owen Ashworth spoke about the tour that will bring him to the Drunken Unicorn tomorrow, June 26, just prior to heading out on the road.

Of the battery-operated keyboards that have defined his singular sound, Ashworth says it was a keyboard his brother lent him that first provoked his fascination with the simplistic instrument.

“It kind of sounded down on its own; the arrangements sounded skeletal but complete to my ears,” Ashworth said of the inherent moodiness Casio keyboards evoke.

“It was an interesting challenge writing songs on a little keyboard. I think having self-imposed limitation can breed really interesting results.”

“It’s like a class assignment, like ‘Write something in the noir style, in 150 words.’ Having those limitations is just a really good way to build my skill as a songwriter,” Ashworth continued, correctly presupposing a familiarity with his history as a film school drop-out.

In turn, the reporter correctly guessed that Dogme 95, the film movement pioneered by Lars von Trier, influenced Ashworth’s self-imposed restrictions.

“I loved the idea of art being made under extreme conditions. I think Dogme 95 was absolutely part of that influence,” he confirmed.

And with that, a quiet high-five to Intro to Film.

CFTPA plays with the Donkeys and Tree Creature at the Drunken Unicorn Tuesday, June 26. Tickets are $7 in advance.
