Big Boi, meet Atlanta Ballet
August 7th, 2007 by Mosi Reeves in Backstage PassWhen Janelle Monae first revealed that Purple Ribbon would collaborate with the Atlanta Ballet, it seemed to make sense. After all, her upcoming Metropolis (and hey, I know y’all are sick of CL gabbing about it) is a highly operatic piece.
But now it looks like the whole camp, namely Big Boi, will take part in the production. In fact, it’s called Big with Antwan “Big Boi” Patterson and choreography by Laurie Stallings. You can read the press release here.
I’m nervous as to what it will look like. Will it be Big Boi, Monae, Scar, C-Bone and others standing around on stage as ballet performers flutter around them? Or will it be a relatively straightforward piece set to music from Purple Ribbon? I hope it’s the latter. I think Big Boi is dope, but the sight of him rapping alongside ballet dancers could be kinda goofy-looking.
At any rate, Big will only last six performances from April 12-18, 2008, so you should probably purchase tickets now.

So I head over to CL’s new blog, Janelle Monae Notes, for the latest on J.M. Let’s see … Janelle hits homer # 756; Janelle announces reinvention of the wheel; Hillary and Obama both drop out of presidential race to back Janelle’s candidacy. Slow news day for Monae worshippers. But then I read THIS. C’mon, guys, enough is enough. This project was announced as BIG BOI’s collaboration with the Atlanta Ballet MONTHS AGO. But it’s only now penetrating your addled minds that “the whole camp, namely Big Boi, will take part” and not just your beloved Janelle? Come on. What else are you going to give her credit for?
I guess it’s not that bad. As CL-manufactured celebrities go, Janelle certainly makes more sense than “intrepid blogger-journalist” Andisheh Noonecares. So when’s her first cover story?

Actually, our fjrst annual music issue, which ran on May 2, featured Monae on the cover alongside Peter Furgiuele of Gringo Star.
Technically, I first found out about the Atlanta Ballet performance from her, and she didn’t mention that it was a Big Boi production. This was five months ago, before the official announcement was made. And yes, I did check the Atlanta Ballet website at the time, and there were no concrete details yet about the performance.
So yeah, there’s been a lot of Janelle Monae lately. Believe it or not, I (and I’m assuming others here) follow other people in Atlanta, too, and you’ll see that reflected in our coverage. But that’s the nature of the news biz…sometimes things tend to coagulate.
