Krystal Woods Benefit at The Earl this Saturday

July 29th, 2008 by Chad Radford in Music news

Krystal Woods

Several Atlanta musicians, performers and independent businesses are rallying at The Earl this Sat., Aug. 2 for A Sight For Sore Eyes: A Benefit for Krystal Woods.

Woods is an employee at Aurora Coffee in L5P and suffers from a degenerative eye condition known as Karatoconus, which means her corneas are deteriorating to such an extreme that within the year she will be completely blind. The only way save her sight is via complete cornea replacements, which carries a price tag of $10,000 per eye.

It’s pretty much impossible to raise that kind of money on a Barista’s wages, and Woods doesn’t have health insurance. She applied for Medicaid, but was apparently denied on the ground that she’s not blind enough nor poor enough to qualify.

To raise the funds to pay for her new corneas, the Selmanaires, the Preakness, DJ Dookie Platters, DJ Chris Devoe, local burlesque star Vagina Jenkins, aerialist Leanna Repass and others are organizing a benefit show at The Earl this Saturday night.

There will be a raffle for prizes from Liberty Tattoo, Memorial Tattoo, Criminal Records, Ria’s Bluebird, Murphy’s restaurant, Taco Mac, Everybody’s Pizza, Figo Pasta, Righteous Room, Corner Tavern, American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Cherry Bomb, Sweetgrass Spa, Key Lime Pie, A Cappella Books and others.

Bond Community Credit Union has created an account for the benefit. Donations can be made to A Sight For Sore Eyes or Krystal Woods.

And last but not least, from Aug. 9th to the 31st Aurora is also hosting a silent art auction with all proceeds going to Krystal Woods. If you’re an artist interested in donating a piece, contact Sight4SoreEyes@gmail.com or call 404-892-7158.

I’m sorry to hear this about Krystal but really happy her friends are helping her out. No wonder; She’s always so gracious and upbeat, and interested in other people at Aurora.

Anyone else sick of America’s “health-care system”? I had to sign a waiver to get health insurance. Only problem, that waiver made sure that the health insurance company would never have to treat or cover the one surgery i need. Bah…I’m moving to Europe.
