Live review: Vivian Girls at The Earl. Sun., Sept. 28

September 29th, 2008 by Chad Radford in Music news

One thing that’s been hit particularly hard by the Orwellian gas shortage that’s crippling the Southeast is attendance at local shows. Brooklyn trio Vivian Girls tore it up for the enthusiastic, but sparse crowd that ventured to the Earl on Sunday night. The somber and freewheeling trio ran through a hazy batch of songs performed exactly as they appear on their album. Michigan’s Tyvek and local trio Rizzudo closed the show, with respectively ramshackle and adept performances.

But most people wandered out to the The Earl’s front patio during the show to socialize and speculate about the fuel crisis. Will it really be weeks before it’s over? Why isn’t this making national headlines? And where is Sonny Perdue during all of this? No radio, or television address, not even a blog saying “people, this is what we need to do…”

At least he posed on the capital steps and prayed for rain at the peak of the drought last year. Now he’s MIA when outside aide couldn’t come sooner. I read a local news website after the show that says he’s on vacation in Europe right now, which seems all too fitting. Whatever the case may be, he wasn’t at Vivian Girls’ show, and out of fear of using up what precious few gasoline drops we have left, not many other people were there either.

Shame the Vivian Girls got a whole two sentences here. Why even pose like you’re writing a review if you’re going to bitch about gas and the dubious argument that its the reason people don’t come out to see an obscure act? Puh-lease.

i saw stereolab and atlas sound at variety play house this weekend and it was not nearly as crowded as i thought it would be. not having gas was all that anyone that i knew talked about. i for one am not going to any more shows this week because i have no gas in my car:(

good viviangirls review. wish i could have seen them.

    Hey Gah,

There was plenty about Vivian Girls in the CL and in Crib Notes. What else could you want to know about the, as you put it, “obscure act.” I was there. Tyvek sucked. Rizzudo sucked. Chad did them a favor by glossing over it. The conversations on the patio were far more interesting than the show itself. Did you really feel soooooooooooo motivated by his review that you just had to leave your little anonymous comment? Puh-lease grow up!

What else would I like to know? Plenty of things! From this write-up, I get that Vivian Girls hail from Brooklyn and are both “somber” and “freewheeling” and performed hazy songs. Fuck me for wondering what they actually SOUND like. Give me some reference points…other bands, whatever. The writer says they played the song exactly like they are on the album, well, tell me about the album then! It’s far from an unreasonable request to actually want to know something/anything about the music. If Radford wants to bitch about gas and politics, there are other places for it.

    Dear Gah…,

The Sept. 24 issue of CL featured a nice little write up about the Vivian Girls by the one and only Mr. Chad Radford. Check it out:

  6. Da da da Says:

Vivian Girls sucked. The drummer walked off stage and immediately said to her roadie, “We sucked so bad.”

    Tyvek was great.

Dear readers, we invite you — as we do every week — to write your own concert review. Send it to music@creativeloafing.com by 9 a.m. Monday morning. If we like it, your review gets printed in on our music backpage. We even throw in a couple of Atlanta concert tix to sweeten the deal. But mainly, we just want to hear your spin on live music around town.
