No hard feelings aimed at you personally, Shannon. I was just a bit put out by the "exclusionary " tone of the comments in the blog, and I mentioned the sideburns to make a point that it is easy to slag anyone on some physical aspect or even presumed (basement dwelling - except for David T. Lindsey of course) stereotype. That "counter-cultural snobbishness" was the sort of attitude that forced myself and many friends away from the Star Bar 6 years ago. I know that is not your attitude at all, nor what you intended to say. I apologize for ruffling feathers, and hope we are cool.

I really have too many records already, so maybe I will set up and sell some of my useless oddities at the next one.

I agree with Suzy Q and I'm usually too focused on rabidly crate digging to feel uncomfortable...I do however often get comments like "WOW-I can't believe A GIRL actually knows about that band?!" I can't tell you how many times I have heard that at various record shows. And I know they know better.

Looks like a good time though-we've got a Fringe Factory gig up in NYC this weekend-otherwise I'd be right there with cash in hand!

I don't think all women feel "uncomfortable" at record shows. Though I think it's a bit annoying when some record vendors undermine our music knowledge. But they tend to lighten up when we can continue to hold a music conversation with them. Whether a record show is at the Marriott or L5P, I'll go where there's good music available. Record geeks unite!

Hey Slim lighten up. I am 42 years old, qualifying as middle age. I don't wear tight pants, they are uncomfortable. I'm not a rock star. I have been known to wear sideburns, mostly in honor of my uncles who introduced me to rock and roll. Having a beard makes you pretty indie rock at the moment though. I also own my house and have a room full of records.
As far as commenting on women felling uncomfortable at the record shows, I based my comments on the feelings of my wife, Vicki and Suzy of Fringe Factory and a multitude of female record buyers I meet at my job here at Criminal.
So c'mon down on Saturday and drink a beer and we can discuss the best way to file a collection. Or I'll see you at the Star Bar Cash Tribute as Adam (talk about mutton chops!) and I try not to ruin Anna's country roots.

Two points:

1. The Atlanta Record Show is regularly held at the Marriott Century Center near Clairmont Road, several miles "inside" the perimeter. At one time it was held for a few months in Windy Hill (OTP), but that ended quickly.

2. I don't understand the need for the comment about women not feeling comfortable at the Atlanta Record Shows. I have attended about 90% of them over the last 7-8 years, and I have never witnessed any misogyny or leering by the record geeks. Sure, some of them are clearly Asperger poster boys, but the comments about "middle-aged, basement-dwelling, sandal-wearing, mama’s boy" is quite condescending and stereotypical.

So do you have to be a tight pant wearing, sideburned, rock star to be cool enough to attend this particular record show in L5P? Unfortunately, that leaves me out, as I dress for comfort in my middle age, and it's easier to have a beard than try to keep those mutton chops even. But I do own my house, with one room full of records. I guess I can just stay home and listen to the ones I have never played.
