WRFG-FM launches emergency fundraising drive

As if we need more proof that the economic crunch is hitting home, WRFG-FM (89.3) announced its experiencing a “cash flow crunch,” according to station administrator Joan Baptist.
The community-funded station hopes to raise $20,000 before its next regularly scheduled fundraising drive in April to make up for major sponsorship losses. “Things are serious, we’re trying our best and everybody’s stepping up. Our volunteers are being really helpful,” Baptist continued.
One such volunteer, DJ Tabone, who hosts The Soul Chamber on Wednesdays from 2-4 p.m., posted a MySpace bulletin stating that “this is the most crucial week in WRFG’s 35 year history.” He continued, “it’s highly probable that we may be off the air.”
While Baptist says she doesn’t think that’s going to happen, she acknowledges that the station is in dire need. “The fall [2008] fund drive was just OK and didn’t give us the cushion we needed.” As a result, the station is pushing for online listener donations of $1,000 per day.
