Miike Snow: Miike Snow

June 17th, 2009 by Ben Westhoff in Music news

Miike Snow is an indie-dance-pop trio comprised of Swedish producers Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg and New York beat maker Andrew Wyatt. Yeah, it’s confusing, and yes, the name is ridiculous (it’s an homage to Japanese film director Takeshi Miike). But forget about all of that. The self-titled debut LP is a sparkling, delirious, 47-minute sprint, full of enough earworms for a hard-of-hearing Alaskan fishing crew. Members of Miike Snow have produced songs for artists including Kylie, Madonna and Britney, and certain Miike Snow tracks, including “Animal” and “Song for No One,” are just as infectious. A mixture of electro-pop, guitar-based dance rock and one or two downtempo electronic numbers, the album never really comes up for air. The lyrics are often forgettable — “I wanna rewrite my heart and let the future in” — but never fear, Miike Snow will start your parties right. (Downtown) 4 stars out of 5
