mtvU Woodies seem a little limp

October 7th, 2009 by Ben Westhoff in Music news

What are the mtvU Woodies, exactly, and why should we care? Every fall music journalists are bombarded with press releases about this awards show, which will air on December 4. This year nominees include former-Atlantan Asher Roth (”Woodie of the Year”) and transplanted Atlantan Janelle Monae, (”Left Field Woodie,” given to “genre-busters”).

Ostensibly voted on by college students, the Woodies aren’t really focused on “college radio” music; though underground talents such as P.O.S. and Matt and Kim got in there somehow. You don’t get more mainstream than Green Day and Drake, for one thing, and they’re both nominated. That said, a whole gaggle of university stations are nominated for the “College Radio Woodie.”

So, the question remains, what, besides a bunch of dick puns (the “Good Woodie” honors community service) is the point of the Woodies? Who is the target demographic? Lastly, what’s that I smell? Oh, it must be layoffs in the mtvU division.
