Relief for the survivors of last week’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti can’t wait, which is why Big Boi had to skip the valet and park directly in front of restaurant/lounge Rare last night. “What the?” said the valet, with whom I was talking, when a black Mercedes pulled up onto the sidewalk, directly in front of the charity event. He scampered over, but upon realizing the driver was the dubiously-named half of OutKast (Big is actually quite short) he let it go.

?
The event was sponsored by CARE, an international nonprofit based in Atlanta dedicated to fighting world poverty. A couple hundred folks dressed in their finest finery stalked the recently-reopened, swanky premises on Piedmont Avenue — that is, except for us, who were wearing the only unwrinkled sweater we could find. Each had donated $20, and got the chance to rub elbows with folks like Big and Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall. A bunch of bizarre ballerinas were also in attendance; they were dressed the part, but moved more like human statues (or robots) than dancers.

Yeah, it was a bit strange, but, hey, it was for a good cause.
