ATL shows love for Guru with ‘The Kumite’

Methuzulah leads an all-star Atlanta cast in a profoundly prophetic tribute

While we’re on the subject of Guru tributes, a very fine one has recently emerged from right here in the A. “The Kumite” is a nine-minute collaborative track helmed by Methuzulah and featuring a host of Atlanta MCs such as 4-Ize, Señor Kaos, Boog Brown, Tommy Lee Soul and others rapping over a Gang Starr instrumental. In a profoundly prescient twist, the track was recorded months before Guru’s ill health was made public.

The result of this all-star alliance is a tight slice of throwback-style hip-hop; the one positive thing that Guru’s passing seems to have engendered is a renewed interest in the fluid, organic sound of Gang Starr and other such groups of yesteryear. Next thing you know we’ll be seeing Gucci Mane doing his thing all over some obscure Ali Shaheed Muhammad track. Or not.
