Corndogorama 2008 playlist (part III): The classic standby

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Hi folks! We’ve returned today for the third and final part in the Corndogorama – Year of the Mustard King playlist trilogy.

For our last installment of meaty and tasty music, we’re focusing on ol’ fashioned yellow mustard. Bright yellow and tangy, American yellow mustard is a classic companion for many a summertime treat. Similarly, the bands on the yellow mustard playlist recall traditional rock and roll music— from the country-tinged to the modern and radio-ready.

Corndogorama 2008 playlist (part II): Little Miss Honey Mustard

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Hey there, guys and gals! We’re back for the second installment of the Corndogorama – Year of the Mustard King playlist.

Today, we’re focusing on honey mustard, the go-to sweet sauce for your chicken fingers, french fries and, of course, corndogs. Like the condiment, the bands on the honey mustard playlist are all on the sweet side. Of course, the kick is often waiting just underneath that sing-along chorus, so don’t let your guard down for too long.

Corndogorama 2008 playlist (part I): Of corndogs and kings

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Mmmm, corndogs. Who can resist that tasty summertime treat — a mystery-meat hot dog all wrapped up in a blanket of fried batter? Vegetarians, maybe (though for the lacto-ovos among us, there are these lovely substitutes).

Luckily, this weekend Lenny’s Bar will host the 12th annual Corndogorama where they’ll be serving up plenty of those meaty lollipops (it sounds dirty, but they really are kind of like lollipops with that whole edible item on a stick business). Oh, and there will be tons of local bands.

2008 marks the “Year of the Mustard King” for Corndogorama. In honor of this regal festival, we have taken a smattering of songs and crafted some sample packs for you, the beloved readers. Think of them as the musical version of those fast food condiment packets that are currently overheating in your glove compartment … you know, only better.

For the rest of this week, we’ll post a new playlist with a delicious mustard theme. Each playlist will feature six songs from some local acts playing at this year’s Corndogorama.

Today, we’re taking a special look at English mustard.

Girl Talk offers new online release for free, sort of

Friday, June 20th, 2008

music_feature1_201.jpgOf all the musical combos that will probably never occur, a collaboration between the Carpenters, Metallica and Lil Mama has to top the list.

But thanks to Pittsburgh-based Greg Gillis — the man behind Girl Talk — such aural fantasies can finally come to fruition. (Don’t tell me it’s not a combo you’ve lain awake nights dreaming of?)

His newest album, the 14-track Feed the Animals, continues the trend that gained popularity with his ’06 release Night Ripper — a CD that featured him mashing together absurdly diverse elements to create infectious pop music. The new album is currently available for download from Illegal Art in the same name-your-own-price format Radiohead used last year with the successful release of In Rainbows.

The more you pay for Feed the Animals, the more features you’ll get. Five dollars buys mp3s or the option of FLAC files, plus a one-file seamless mix of the album; $10 gets you mp3s, FLAC files and the physical CD when it is released.

Those who choose to download the mp3s for free are forwarded to a rather guilt-inducing option list where they must check why they prefer not to pay. It reads:

No one likes a sober rocker: Why AA will kill your career faster than dying

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

I have an idea, a hypothesis that needs to be tested if possible.

First, however, let me take you back to high school math class to explain my theory. I am proposing that music quality and sobriety are inversely related. Let’s make an equation (ripping off ideas much?), shall we?

If y = awesome quotient of music and x = level of sobriety, then y = -m(x) + c

It’s all coming back, isn’t it? All those painfully long math classes in rooms that were never quite the right temperature, and one of your classmates (never could be sure which one) smelled totally nasty. But there was nothing you could do because you were stuck in class until the bell (truly the saving grace of high school) released you from your too cold/too hot, smells-to-high-heaven torture room. Or maybe you liked math.

Anyway, the theory I’m throwing around essentially says that the more a musical artist abstains from drugs and alcohol, the worse the music is. Of course, there are exceptions, but on the whole, musicians are better when they are wasted and left for gone at rock bottom — tortured.

A lot of artists (the shitty ones) will claim that drugs and alcohol make them more creative by expanding their minds. Not true. To those of you that make such claims, get sober for a week, look at the giant turds you’re churning out and get back to me.

EDITOR’S NOTE: In light of this week’s CL cover story on Atlanta blues man Sean Costello, 1979-2008, we want to acknowledge the ill-timing and insensitivity of this post, which was written in a humorous light. The author, Cameron Hubbard, had no prior knowledge of the upcoming cover story. We apologize for offending anyone.
