HIP TO BE WEIRD: Hollyweerd

It may sound reminiscent of OutKast, but Hollyweerd is definitely unique, and the group is creating a huge buzz in the Atlanta underground hip-hip world.

The group has just been added to the list of artists competing for Urb magazine’s “Next 100″ list of 2008. Urb.com says:

“The great thing about Holly Weerd is that they have the perfect balance of familiarity and expansion. There spaceship travels upon breathing synth melodies and staple drum patterns have gotten them much love on local radio and an average of three hundred myspace plays a day! Not bad for a group of atliens who don’t even belong to a label.”

You can check them out with Yelawolf, Rita J, Fiona Simone, Gripplyaz, and DJ Mafioso at the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, Feb. 2. Doors open at 9 p.m. $5 before 11 p.m., $10 after.

Also, look for Maurice Garland’s story on Hollyweerd to run in next week’s print edition.

Canadian does Kanye

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Canadian artist/producer Colin Munroe released a video for his unofficial remix of Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights.” He doesn’t just sing over the track, like most remixes, but adds new sounds and moves the samples a bit. Finally, we see a hip-hop artist get one of their tracks snatched and redone. Hip-hop artists do it all the time, and it’s funny to see it happen in the reverse — and done so well. Kanye must not mind. He posted it on his blog.

Munroe’s album Don’t Think Less of Me will be released with support from Dallas Austin’s Rowdy Records.

D.R.E.S. tha Beatnik hosts Afterlife this Saturday???

Friday, January 18th, 2008

In case you don’t understand the relevance of this post, let me explain.

Afterlife … an 18-plus party at Masquerade every Saturday with resident DJs Preston Craig (creator of KissAtlanta.com and Decatur Social Club), Rob Rowe, Captain Crunk and Treasure Fingers. It’s pretty much like a rave minus the Ecstacy. Electro remixes of your favorite songs, old and new. Colorful lights. Kids wildin’ out.

D.R.E.S. … holds it down as the ambassador of underground hip-hop in Atlanta. In the CL Best of Atlanta 2002 issue, he was said to have the “rockingest esophagus in town.” He produces and hosts Mic Club, an MC/producer battle, on Tuesdays at Apache Cafe. Every Friday, he’s on the mic at MJQ’s hip-hop night singing lyrics, shouting out folks, rocking the crowd. Anything that has to do with “real” hip-hop in the city, D.R.E.S. is a part of.

I’m always down for a clash of cultures, and this should be a good one.

Here’s a taste of both:
