Blog Party: Señor Kaos shoots a vid; Lil Kim breaks the ice; Ohmpark goes on tour

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Weekly scoops from some of our favorite Atlanta-based music blogs…

>>via the Kaos Effect — What are you doing this Saturday? Making a cameo in Senor Kaos’ new music video this weekend would sure be unique:

What’s going on party people. Just wanted to spread the word that I’m shooting a video this Saturday in Atlanta for the song “Automatic Classic.”

The shoot will be taking place at The Atlanta Bench on Marietta Street at 9am. Hoping everybody gets a chance to make it out. The flyer is below.

>>via Straight From the A — Yet another Beyonce music video. Believe it or not it’s the sixth single form her most recent album I am…Sasha Fierce:

Beyonce has released yet another “classic” video. “Sweet Dreams” dropped a day sooner than MTV’s planned schedule. The video, directed by Adria Petty, begins with Bey having a soundless sleep and continues with a dance sequence during sunrise. “Sweet Dreams” is the 6th U.S. single from Beyonce’s third studio album “I Am…Sasha Fierce.”

>>via Kiss Atlanta — Dance superstar Bob Sinclar returns with a few new songs. Grab your glow sticks and head over to Kiss Atlanta to stream:

Another DJ asked me if I had the new Bob Sinclar at our party last night, he just came back from Italy and had the “Lala Song” stuck in his head. The new album hasn’t got much press, but these songs are not to miss

>>via Crunk + DisorderlyFaith Evans and Lil’ Kim thought it’d be nice to stir up some controversy between each other for old times’ sake:

Sources with AllHipHop.com said that Lil Kim took issue with her representation in Notorious, the biopic in which Faith was attached to.

Faith was in attendance with her husband and Lil Kim was with producer Choke No Joke and to some, this augmented the tension.

“It was really heated,” one source said. “It was about to pop off…there was crazy screaming.”

>>via Ohmpark — Any die hard This Piano Plays Itself fans out there? Make sure to stay tuned to Davy Minor and Ohmpark as he follows the band on tour for three weeks:

Our friends This Piano Plays Itself have invited me to tag along for their summer tour again, so I am taking the blog on the road for the next three weeks.

Foo Fighters to play the White House on the 4th

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Apparently President Obama is a Foo Fighters fan.

According to Rolling Stone, the Foo Fighters — who have been on hiatus since late 2008 — are set to play the White House on July 4 in honor of Independence Day. The band will entertain Obama and company with a short set on the South lawn.

Blog Party: Mariah Carey’s goatee nothing to obsess over

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The death of Michael Jackson continues to stir up buzz among the Atlanta music blogosphere. Straight from the “A” posts the final photos of the King of Pop.

Mariah Carey may be flirting with disaster again based on the recent pics of her dressed like a man on the set of Obsessed? Per Crunk and Disorderly:

Mariah will always be that crazy bitch pushing the ice cream cart on TRL  while rambling about butterflies, Hello Kitty stickers, and unicorns and shit to me. However, I will be say that she tries hard to make people give a damn about her. So people, do you give a damn?

7″ Atlanta has a fever and the only prescription is more Black Lips. Shows-a-plenty in the A, including a benefit for B Jay:

The Black Lips will play again Thursday at a sold-out show at The Earl and Friday as The Spooks with Zoroaster and more bands to be named at a WRAS benefit. A second benefit for BJ is Saturday at 529 and will feature The Carbonas in what will likely be there last show until at least next summer.

Don’t Drive a Faster Car in this Georgia Tech parking garage:

This week, part of the parking deck collapsed at Centergy on 5th Street, near Tech Square (Georgia Tech campus). Follow tweets about the collapse on Twitter.

Wavves’ Nathan Williams responds to onstage breakdown

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Ecstasy, Valium and Xanax seem to be the new drug cocktail of choice these days. Well, at least for lead singer Nathan Williams of Wavves. Is it any wonder he doesn’t even remember what Pitchfork has called, “the most epic onstage meltdown a band of their small size could conjure“?

In his latest Pitchfork interview, he sets the record straight, sort of:

“I can’t fuck up once? If people think that I’m not going to fuck up, there’s no reason to even come and watch me.”

Note to Nathan: Leave the big boy drugs to Motley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses.

Last week’s Blog Party: Still making Wavves

Monday, June 29th, 2009

>>The recent meltdown of lead singer Nathan Williams of Wavves continues to gather commentary from everyone. To refresh your memory, Ohmpark gives an interesting chronicle of the event and aftermath.

A few weeks ago, Wavves had a meltdown on stage at a big music festival in Spain which Pitchfork called “the most epic onstage meltdown a band of their small size could conjure”

>>Last year Matador teamed up with True Panther Sounds record label to help put out Girls’ debut 7″. The band is back at it again with a target release of September 22.

We are proud to announce the September 22 release of the debut full-length from Girls, entitled Album. The record will be released by True Panther Sounds, the label that released Girls’ debut 7?, “Lust For Life,” last year, in conjunction with Matador.

>>Shining Path, the Balkans and the Trashcans show is still creating quite the buzz amongst fans. 7″ Atlanta does a good job describing the show and an even better job of making you feel guilty for missing out.

The Trashcans shared the bill Friday at the Watch Yr Head House with a couple of awesome young bands.

The house is located off Memorial and has a basement in which the bands play and a barn-style garage for chilling in between sets.

>>If I had the money, I still wouldn’t carry a Gucci man-purse — no matter what Crunk and Disorderly says:

Titty Boi and Dolla Boy [collectivly known as Playaz Circle] were two of the more fashionable acts to perform at Birthday Bash this past weekend. And yes, that’s a fork dangling on Dolla’s chest. Tell mama the first thing that comes to your mind.

Driver behind murder of T.I.’s friend, Philant Johnson, sentenced to prison

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

When T.I.’s long-time friend and personal assistant Philant Johnson was killed in 2006, the Atlanta rapper was distraught to say the least.

T.I. — now serving a 366 day sentence in Arkansas — and his entourage, including Johnson, were involved in a shooting after leaving a nightclub in Cincinnati in early May 2006.

Padron Thomas, the man who drove the vehicle from which the deadly shots were fired, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

From the Associated Press:

Forty-one-year-old Padron Thomas told a judge he’s a “knucklehead” and wishes he could take back what he did. He was sentenced Wednesday on gun charges and unrelated federal drug charges.

He testified in December against his younger brother, who was sentenced to 66 years in prison for shooting Philant Johnson in May 2006 after a T.I. concert in Cincinnati.

Three others were injured in the shooting. The Grammy-winning Atlanta rapper wasn’t hurt.

In exchange for his testimony, Thomas received a reduced sentence for his involvement in a drug ring that shipped marijuana from California to Cincinnati.

Portugal. The Man plays the Earl on Saturday

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Portugal. The Man, Batata Doce and Noel Stephen. $10. 9 p.m. Sat., June 13. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.

Portugal. The Man does whatever the hell they want to when it comes to making music.

Ranging from alternative, to post-hardcore and even all the way to country — whatever the genre may be — these guys have the balls to make any kind of music that suits their mood. Touring in the wake of their fourth studio album in four years, The Satanic Satanist, the band proves that being prolific is its only priority.

“Honestly, I think we should be putting out more music,” lead singer Jouh Baldwin Gourley told Alternative Press. “It keeps you thinking, keeps you growing and progressing. If you stop and let it sit for too long, I feel like you start to lose track of where you were going.”

Passion Pit’s penchant for disenfranchised vocals and infectious beats

Friday, June 5th, 2009

Passion Pit. $12-$14. 9 p.m. Sat., June 6. The Drunken Unicorn, 736 Ponce de Leon Ave. 404-870-0575. www.thedrunkenunicorn.net.

There’s something to be said about the emergence of indie and electronic music in the past couple of years. Each genre has respectively gathered an avid fan base hungry for the next fix of disenfranchised vocals or infectious beats.

So what happens when you combine the two?

Well, that’s where Passion Pit — the musical vehicle of lead singer Michael Angelakos’ love life — comes into play. Literally. Passion Pit started as a mixtape Angelakos recorded for his girlfriend for Valentine ’s Day. (more…)
