Listen to the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Masacre. Violins amongst the violence show up and add piercing scapes to what on mute is already some of the most terrifying footage ever shot.

You brought up Psycho, there you have another great example of violins highlighting terror.

I think you have stumbled on a great truth here. Violins are evil creations that exist only to bring about the end of the world. As proof check out this violin concerto by Shostakovich.
