Atlas Sound fires up the tour machine once again, this time Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox has enlisted the Selmanaires to serve as his backing band for this show of ghostly pop. Stereolab-esque post-rock Brits Broadcast play in support of their latest release, Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate. The Selmanaires pull double duty as they open the show Thursday night, Oct. 14. $15. 8:30 p.m. The Earl. 404-522-3950.

Chad Radford: So what’s up with the Atlas Sound tour; the Selmanaires are the Atlas Sound band for the tour with Broadcast and you’re opening the shows as well?
Tommy Chung: Yes. Bradford has been collaborating with Broadcast for a little while and we were always jealous because Broadcast has been one of our favorite bands pretty much since they became a band. Bradford asked Herb if we wanted to go too, and it was like, ‘let me think about it… Um yeah!’ A week later Bradford said he was sick of being a one-man sampler show and asked how we felt about being the backing band too. It sounded cool so we did one practice with him before a Dirty Projectors show and within the first ten minutes he asked us to play that show. We learned four songs, stretched them out and did like a 10-minute cover of “What Goes On” by the Velvet Underground.

We’ve always had a connection with Deerhunter. Our very first show out was in 2003 with Deerhunter at MJQ before the Drunken Unicorn even existed. It was Deerhunter, Tabitha and we were the openers — back when we were still stand up bass, Wurlitzer and acoustic guitar. After that we pretty much played with Deerhunter every month at Lenny’s. It feels like things have come full-circle now that we’re playing with Atlas Sound.

Helado Negro plays 529 on Wed., Sept. 9

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Helado Negro – “Dahum” from Asthmatic Kitty on Vimeo.

Helado Negro’s musical compositions are an amalgamation of improv performances and happy accidents that are captured, manipulated and molded into final products of hypnotic, post-beat psychedelia via Loops, computers, MPC, samples and live instruments. The man at the center of it all is Roberto Carlos Lange, a producer/visual artist who has collaborated with other artists such as David Ellis, Prefuse 73 and Savath and Savalas, School of Seven Bells, Paul Duncan, Bear in Heaven and more.

Adron, Helado Negro, Jason Ajemian and Social Studies play 529 tonight (Wed., Sept. 9). $7. 9 p.m.

Brightblack Morning Light play WonderRoot tonight (Sun., Aug. 16)

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

Raybob, Naybob and Co. bring Brightblack Morning Light back to Atlanta tonight for a last minute show at WonderRoot. Adron, Tree Creature and Book of Colours are opening.

Word is BBML had some van troubles which caused them to have to cancel a few shows in the region, and since they were nearby, WonderRoot happily obliged. The show starts at 8:30 p.m.

There is nothing posted about the cover, but most of the people in these bands are hippies so it probably won’t be very much.

WonderRoot is located at 982 Memorial Dr. 404-254-5955.

Adron talks about her new Burdwurld digital EP

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Chad Radford: Tell me about your new free Burdwurld digital EP?
Well, it was largely experimental given that it was my first time ever recording myself for serious, first time using Pro-Tools. I recorded and mixed everything by myself, which was a huge challenge and I play all of the instruments except for drums, bass and marimba on “Timid Young Ones,” so it came out very personal. It’s all pretty much pure, un-fucked with Adron inspo-tainment.

Who plays drums, bass and marimba on that song?
Drums – Jason Trammel. Bass – Jorgen Jorgensen-Briggs. Marimba – Simon Boyar.

Do you have a favorite song on the EP?
Hard to say. Maybe “You Could Be Anywhere.” But I’m also really happy about “Little Face.” Honestly, I’m really happy with the whole thing given that I really didn’t know what I was doing. It was an incredibly challenging and educational experience. I’m really proud of the electric guitar parts, especially on “Little Face.” I’m still kind of learning to wield electric guitar, it doesn’t come very naturally to me, but the sound is such a good vibe.

Adron wants to come home and she’s asking for help

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Atlanta’s favorite wayward daughter Adron has decided that she wants to come home from New York and she’s now accepting donations.

The following note appeared on Adron’s Facebook page this weekend:

Dear beloved, cherished, and invested Partners of Adron:

I am moving back to Atlanta. It is my paradise island tropical vacation heartland spirit, and I feel it in the depths of my innermost guts that I belong there. If you feel enthusiastic about this endeavor, guess what! You can help! And thus feel somehow marginally responsible when I become a huge success in the southern United States and beyond. Because I’m broke as a fat man’s pony, and I need your love and support. And your money, so I can afford to rent a van, and bring all my crap home.

Donate like 2 or 3 bucks, or whatever you want really, using my amazing new technology, the Dron-Aid Dron-line Dronation Engine!

This amazing technology requires PayPal, and I can’t think of a simpler way, but if you can, I’m all ears.

Donations are being accepted via Paypal.

In the meanitme Adron’s new 5-song Burdwurld EP is avaialbe as a free download via her website.

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Paradeluvian, teleotropic, onaneiric.

People who smoke cigarettes and tell me that Veganism and psychedelics are unhealthy.

LP for at home. MP3s for cinematic dusky walks with headphones.

Flashy, impeccably clean and expensive new pan-Asian bistros with their names in Papyrus font.

With whom would you most like to play a game of spin the bottle?

Best local instrumentalist who deserted Atlanta: Adron

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Editor’s Note: Pick up Creative Loafing’s 2008 Best of Atlanta issue this week to get hip to the city’s best in music and nightlife. There was too much good stuff to print in the After Dark section, so we’ll be posting some of the critics’ picks here on Crib Notes for your viewing pleasure. Stay tuned.

ADRON is a young, self-taught maestro with a nylon-stringed guitar. Her self-titled debut CD on New Street Records is a gorgeous reminder why it’s a shame that she up and left her old stomping grounds in late 2007 for the mean streets of Brooklyn. But her time away has served her well. Over the last year, her balance of quietude and quasi-Brazilian folk strumming has matured to a level that is far beyond her years. It’s due, no doubt, to her throwing herself into the mix of New York’s thriving musical environment. — Chad Radford www.adronmusic.com.

Adron: Homecoming queen

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Adron

Decatur native Adrienne McCann left Georgia in August 2007 on the eve of her 20th birthday. The burgeoning singer/songwriter of fairy-tale folk songs, who is better known as Adron, knew that New York was the place for a young, ambitious musician looking to move up in the world. So she packed her bags and went north. A year later she is returning to play a CD-release show for her self-titled debut on the Atlanta/Brooklyn-based indie label New Street Records.

Though the only major-label interest in her work has come via a MySpace message from a Capital Records A&R guy, her escape to New York has brought her one step closer to her dream. “No one comes to New York to be half-assed about music,” she says. “I feel like I’m in the right place at the right time.”

When she was still living in Atlanta, Adron made a name for herself as a rising local underdog. Her guitar playing possessed a certain charm and skill level that surpassed her teenage years. No matter where she played, she wrapped the entire room around her finger.

During shows at the Star Bar, A Cappella Books and the Earl in the summer of 2007, Adron would appear onstage, often wearing what looked like pajamas. Her fingers moved across the fret board of her guitar with messy precision, though there was not a hint of nervousness in her performances. Waves of tropicalia dripped from her hands as she played and cooed, interspersing her singing with clicks of her tongue, bird chirps and mouth pops.

Adron plays with Benji Hughes, Telenovela, Molotov Pipedream and DJ Chris Devoe at the Earl on Wed., July 30.

Adron plays The 5 Spot tonight (Fri, May 23)

Adron

BABE IN THE WOODS: Adron (photo by Chad Radford)

When she still lived in Atlanta Adron (Adrienne McCann) was one of Atlanta’s best kept secrets. Since moving to Brooklyn about six months ago the city has felt like a much emptier place without her. Tonight Adron returns to her old stomping grounds to play a show at The 5 Spot in L5P.

In July the wayward songstress will release her self-titled debut on Atlanta’s New Street Recordings, home to fellow local folkies JuJu B Solomon and Isia Cooper.

Adron skews the traditions of a little lady with a big guitar by embracing a strong element of Tropicalia and a quasi-Brazilian-style strum that is at once baroque, hypnotic and totally enthralling.

Imagine, if you will, the sounds of Beck pre-Sea Change, Os Mutantes, the Beatles and Seu Jorge’s soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and you’re somewhere in the right neighborhood, but not quite there. Adron’s songs are as captivating as they are distinctive and this rare homecoming performance is not to be missed.

Chad Radford: How long have you been playing guitar?

Adron: I started when I was 12, I guess. I’ve been playing piano since I was four. I demonstrated an early aptitude for it, but playing piano was always like homework for me. I’m grateful for it and I have an avid appreciation for the great classical masters, but it’s not very useful for me aside from having all of this esoteric invisible knowledge but don’t know that I have. I wanted to play guitar. I knew I wanted to be a kick-ass songwriter … I wanted to be a rock star and I was always thinking of the best avenue to get there so I thought that I should learn to play a guitar. I didn’t want to start writing songs on a piano because it just didn’t feel natural. My brother was a guitar player, so I stole that from him.
