Portugal. The Man plays the Earl on Saturday

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Portugal. The Man, Batata Doce and Noel Stephen. $10. 9 p.m. Sat., June 13. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.

Portugal. The Man does whatever the hell they want to when it comes to making music.

Ranging from alternative, to post-hardcore and even all the way to country — whatever the genre may be — these guys have the balls to make any kind of music that suits their mood. Touring in the wake of their fourth studio album in four years, The Satanic Satanist, the band proves that being prolific is its only priority.

“Honestly, I think we should be putting out more music,” lead singer Jouh Baldwin Gourley told Alternative Press. “It keeps you thinking, keeps you growing and progressing. If you stop and let it sit for too long, I feel like you start to lose track of where you were going.”

Roll Call: Leticia Arioli of Batata Doce

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

For today’s Roll Call we call out Leticia Arioli of Batata Doce.

Who are you?
I am working on finding that one out.

Describe yourself in three words.
Sweet & Sour mix.

Who — dead or alive — would most you like to meet?
Bono, ever since I read the book Killing Bono. Its a love and hate thing. But the guy can engage an entire stadium, you gotta commend him for it.

Who would you most like to slap in the face?
Any disrespectful, condescending men. Seriously, respect the ladies. They are pretty, cherish them, don’t abuse them.

What song do you wish you had written?
Just about every song I love. One of them would be “When Doves Cry” by Prince.

Elvis Costello or Elvis Presley?
Presley and his gyrating hips. I got my mom a wall clock of Elvis Presley with his hips moving to every tick. Now she’s got Elvis’ hips forever moving.

LP, CD or MP3?
LP!! But I am a traitor, I have mostly mp3s now. But its not the same… I hate them in fact.

If you could start one trend, what would it be?
A hugging fever. Like, instead of nodding your head, you just hugged everyone. Hey, we kiss everybody in Brazil, so its doable right?

If you could end one trend, what would it be?
Fake vintage (brand new & expensive) anything.

With whom would you most like to play a game of spin the bottle?
That mysterious, gentlemanly and unattainable vampire from that teen flick Twilight. And I am not kidding. But he doesn’t exist, so I guess I have to say John Cusack.

Batata Doce plays 97 Estoria tonight (Thurs., Dec. 11th). Free. 9 p.m.

Cordero Plays the Earl tonight

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Tonight Ani Cordero and husband, former Rock*A*Teens drummer Chris Verene, return to Atlanta in support of Cordero’s latest album, De Donde Eres (Bloodshot Records).

Both Chris and Ani are former Atlanta residence who now reside in Brooklyn. The new album finds the group delving deeper in to the rhythmic intricacies of Latin music while toning down guitar-driven, indie rock elements of the music. The album is sung entirely in Spanish, and is recommended for those who like Nick Drake, Belle and Sebastian, Os Mutantes, Adron and so on.

To give a listen to the album’s first single, “Ruleta Rusa,” click here.

There is also a pretty gorgeous video for “Ruleta Rusa” that can be watched by clicking below.

Atlanta acts, The Holland Dutch and Batata Doce will also be performing. Batata Doce has been touring the east coast recently and has kept a pretty intensive tour blog/journal of their activities posted on Pine Magazine, which you can read here.

Batata Doce heads up the east coast on tour

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Batata Doce is a Georgia-born outfit that combines the worlds of Brazilian folk music and psychedelic Appalachia. Vocalist/guitarist Leticia Arioli hails from Florianopolis, Brazil and her voice brings an authentic spice to the city rhythms and melodies of guitarist Russell Owens, who hails from the mountains of western North Carolina.

Leticia crafts a soulfully high-energy sound of the Portuguese/English variety, while Russell delivers a more traditionally rock-influenced and finger picking guitar style. The two lead a procession of musicians that includes Justin Hughes (guitar), Justin Sias (bass) and Todd Morrison (drums), Todd Barnett (saxophone) and Ripley Torres (percussion).

The group’s self-released, three-song demo (which can be heard here) evoke smooth, Latin lounge sounds and baroque jazz that conceal hints of pop minimalism and garage rock rhythms.

This Sun., Sept. 21  Batata Doce will hit the road for a few tour dates stretching up and down the east coast.
