Coathangers, Can Can & Judi Chicago play the Earl tonight

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The Coathangers have come a long way since releasing a self-titled debut in September 2007. Scramble, the sophomore album from Atlanta’s premier lady punk quartet (their first was released on Rob’s House) is full of the noisy, yappy, sometimes endearing, and sometimes squelching chatter that has made them such a divisive act. But there’s an air of confidence driving the sharper writing and visceral deliveries on such songs as “Toomerhead” and “Arthritus Sux.”

The slower tempo heard on the album’s stand-out cut, “Stop, Stomp, Stompin,’” and the piano and noise-laced chant of “Sonic You” channel the tension of the group’s chaotic beginnings into a more refined sound. Continue reading.

See how much their time in the trenches has honed their terse, punk rock anthems tonight when they headline a show at the Earl with Can Can and Judi Chicago.

$8. 8 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Rd. 404-522-3950.

John Henderson benefit at the Earl on Tuesday night

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Tomorrow night (Tues., Feb. 17) at the Earl several local bands and artists will host a benefit show for John Henderson, the bartender who was murdered during a robbery in January at the Standard on Memorial Drive.

In addition to the performances an auction will be held to raise money to cover the funeral costs, featuring works of art from R Land, as well as gift certificates from local restaurants. Ticket Alternative is donating $1 of the service charge, and then doubling it. The Earl is also donating all proceeds from the show and auction to Henderson’s family.

The line-up for the night features Atlanta bands Wighat, It’s Elephant’s, Dave Daniels, Can Can and No River City. There will also be a side-stage, with acts TBA. Tickets are $10.

Can Can’s Saturday show to benefit John Henderson Memorial Fund

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Local art-punk band Can Can plans to donate proceeds from its next show (this Saturday at Drunken Unicorn) to the John Henderson Memorial Fund. The band members were friends with Henderson, a bartender who was killed during a robbery at the Standard last week.

Can Can drummer Josh Lemar elaborates below:

A good friend of ours was killed Wednesday in a robbery at Standard Food and Spirits. Our guitarist, Mary Collins, worked there as well. We all go up there and hang out before band practice. John was a good guy. We’re trying to make people more aware of how violent East Atlanta’s starting to get. Its ridiculous.

We’re wanting to have something so people could show up and make donations that would go directly to the John Henderson Memorial Fund, going towards a reward to help catch the people and to offset the cost of his funeral.

I don’t want it be a big to-do benefit concert. I don’t want it to be like ‘Can Can gets publicity cause their buddy died.’ We just want to let people know that they can come and donate. Every penny we make that night selling CDs, t-shirts , our merchandise, we’ll put it toward that as well. There are lots of people who want to donate but don’t know where or how.
