CL’s Chanté LaGon and Chad Radford discuss the first of two record release parties celebrating our 12-inch LP compilation Mixt A, Vol. 1, taking place tonight, May 7, at Eyedrum. The N.E.C., Grip Plyaz, the Balkans and A. Leon Craft all perform. Cover is $10 and includes a copy of the limited-edition vinyl. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m.

My favorite local act is Howlies.  This trio originally from Florida just played the Ballroom for Fringe Factory last month.  I’d never heard them before and was completely blown away.  These guys have so much energy and you could tell they were having the time of their life. It’s so refreshing to see a straight up rock band who seems so genuine about the music they are playing and I felt kinda like I was watching them back in the early ’60’s, when rock n’ roll was a pure and a fun thing to do. I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys took their project very far.

The Luchagors. They don’t get a fraction of the attention they deserve in this city. They write fantastic punky rock songs, they’re a balls-out fun-house live, their singer is the best frontperson in Atlanta, they don’t weigh things down with unnecessary arty-farty pretensions, they aren’t concerned with being part of the cool crowd, and the skinny jeans hip kids ignore them, so you don’t have to deal with that annoyance at their shows. They work hard, play hard, they tour the States and Europe, and they’re also incredibly creative people outside of the band itself. So there.

The Coathangers are easily my favorite Atlanta band of the moment. The girls have grown musically and as songwriters over the past couple of years without losing their senses of fun. Their live shows rarely disappoint, as they treat each outing as a holiday or birthday party. From early, sophomoric offerings like “Don’t Touch My Shit” to newer, well-crafted tunes like “Bury Me,” all of their songs make me happy whenever I hear them. No one else other than the Ramones cheers me up instantly the minute the needle drops. And the sad or angry songs do not quell this instant joy. Joey singing about poison hearts cheers me up, and so does Julia when she screams about breaking someone’s face.

Tommy Brown has been involved in the Atlanta music scene since the 1940s as a drummer, singer, comedian and dancer. He still gets out on the road on a regular basis but also holds court at Blind Willies every few weeks. Tommy has obviously got some deal with the Devil going, as evidenced by his stage performance, wit and charm. Yet, I’m consistently surprised by how many people aren’t aware of him. Tommy is an integral part of Atlanta music history, and still relevant today to anyone who likes music.

Power pop is the future and Gentleman Jesse and His Men are the Jonahs Brothers of the ATL scene.
