The Queen of Rockabilly comes to Drive Invasion

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Sometimes things happen that just seem right, such as the decision to bring Rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson to Drive Invasion 2009. What better way to celebrate the Sunday before Labor Day than in a hot parking lot with over 3000 of your closest friends, a slew of fancy hot rod cars, AND the “Female Elvis”?  In a recent phone interview, Jackson says, “I think I played a drive in theater a few times in the 50s, and the stage was on the roof of the concession stand.”

Jackson is always a big hit at the many rockabilly revivals she participates in around the world. She sees the continued popularity of rockabilly as a unique phenomenon. “Rockabilly takes in a whole lifestyle,” she says. “It seems to take people back to a time when the music was fresh and simple, and for some reason they desire that simpler, slow paced lifestyle.” After many years as a Gospel singer, Jackson found an audience in Europe over 20 years ago that wanted her to revive her rockabilly songs. She noticed a big difference between European audiences and American audiences back then, but the gap has since closed. “I started playing rockabilly revival events in Scandinavia in 1985, and it seemed like it never died out over there like it did in the states. The Europeans were more appreciative and loyal to the music, and would ask me very detailed questions like ‘Who played lead guitar on that track?’… things I didn’t remember!” she laughs. “Now the young Americans are catching up, and paying attention to the details.”

According to CL writer and King Ride participant James Kelly,

In August 1988, a troupe of intrepid Elvis fans left Atlanta and traveled across Dixie to Memphis TN. Their goal was to document on film the international phenomenon of the pilgrimage, a longstanding tradition among various cultures wherein the individual is expected to visit a special place at least once in their life. In this case the “special place” is Graceland, home of the late King of Rock n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Leaving Inman Park’s lamented Austin Avenue Buffet armed with cameras and led by Atlanta country singer Slim Chance driving a massive Cadillac convertible, the group first explored Elvis’ birthplace and the hardware store where he got his first guitar in Tupelo. In Memphis the crew visited Elvis’ karate’ instructor Kang Rhee, got fashion tips fit for a King in Lansky’s Clothing Store, attended an Elvis impersonator’s contest, discussed the furniture in Graceland with Elvis’ personal interior decorator, and many other unique adventures.

Awesome giant douche.

Who — dead or alive — would most you like to meet?
Sam Cooke and Gentleman Jesse Smith (’cause he doesn’t know how to use a cell phone).

Who would you most like to slap in the face?
All the cool people and maybe Mark from Die Slaughterhaus cause it would be kinda fun although I love the kid (in a non-gay way).

What song do you wish you had written?
“She’s the One” by the Ramones.

Elvis Costello or Elvis Presley?
Elvis Presley

LP, CD or MP3?
LP

If you could start one trend, what would it be?
Flat iron hair.

If you could end one trend, what would it be?
Dudes who flat iron their hair.

Roll Call: Ben Coleman of Judi Chicago

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

For the first installment of Crib Notes’ new Roll Call we call out Ben Coleman of the Atlanta electro duo Judi Chicago.

Who are you?
Ben. I’m in a band called Judi Chicago. Pleased to meet you.

Describe yourself in three words.
Mouthy Dancehall Immigrant.

Who — dead or alive — would most you like to meet?
Robert Wyatt, Antonin Artaud, Terry Riley, Sylvester, James Brown, Syd Barrett, Lemmy, The Marx Brothers and Judy Chicago. Preferably all at once, over a good dinner.

Who would you most like to slap in the face?
Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, or any other cretinous faux-patriot bigot-gollum within reach.

What song do you wish you had written?
“Eat Yrself Fitter” by the Fall. “Wind It Up” by the Prodigy. “St. Elmo’s Fire” (the Brian Eno song or the John Parr song, you pick). Anything by Underworld. “Loose Booty” by Sly Stone. “Big Time” by Peter Gabriel.

Elvis Costello or Elvis Presley?
Presley. Costello is a little bland for these buds. I’ll take Reg Presley over both if I have the choice.

LP, CD or MP3?
LP, if I have a choice, but I’m not making a big deal about it. It’s the music that counts, not the medium. However, vinyl remains the best sounding format, and I like big cover art.

If you could start one trend, what would it be?
Dancing in an unironic way to something more interesting than a mash-up or Soulja Boy.

If you could end one trend, what would it be?
Posing / sulking and just generally being an anally retentive know it all misery guts.

With whom would you most like to play a game of spin the bottle?
Girls Aloud, the best British girl group ever. Closer to home, the Coathangers, although I’m pretty sure they’ll beat me up for saying it.

Listen to Judy Chicago’s “Mad Ape.”
