‘69 French film More, with Pink Floyd soundtrack shows at Highland Inn Tues., Nov. 25

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

This Tuesday night Fringe Factory and Movie Lounge present a free screening of director Barbet Schroeder’s 1969 cult/hippie classic, More.

The film captures a slice of life in ’60s Europe where youth and drug cultures collide.  Stefan (Klaus Grunberg) ventures to Paris after graduation, where he becomes enamored with a young American hippie girl, Estelle (Mimsy Farmer).  She lures him to Ibiza, where the dangerous and exotic world of LSD and nude sunbathing are pursued before succumbing to the destructive trappings of heroin addiction.

The film follows the two youths as they fall deeply into a downward spiral of drug abuse and denial.

Famous for its moody Pink Floyd soundtrack, songs in the film include “Green is the Colour,” “Cymbaline,” “The Nile Song” and “Ibiza Bar.”

DJs, as well as a few short films and movie trailers will also be seen and heard throughout the night.

Doors open at 9 p.m. Film starts at 10 p.m. FREE. The Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge is located at 644 N. Highland Ave. near the intersection of North Ave. and N. Highland. For more information call (404) 874-5756 Ext. 450.

Fringe Factory brings Hot Damn! Southern Soul revue to the Earl Sat., Oct. 18

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

This Saturday the Fringe Factory in conjunction with the Chicago-based soul label Rabbit Factory, Inc. will set up shop at The Earl. This Fringe Factory installment has been dubbed “Hot Damn!:  A Southern Soul Revue.” The evening will feature a marathon  of old school Southern soul men taking the stage to do what they do best.

In 1960 Oxford, Mississippi’s Herbert Wiley formed the band, the Checkmates who went on to perform as the backing band for too many super soul legends to name.

After several successful years spent on the road, Wiley decided to quit music altogether to start a family. But in 2002 he came out retirement to reform the Checkmates as a six-piece soul monster churning out real deal gospel, jazz, funk and rock and roll. This second coming of the Checkmates fashions a modern take on the original Checkmates’s sound.

Since then Wiley and Co. have been touring the Southeast playing everywhere from Alabama frat bars to the annual Ponderosa Stomp festival.

Wiley and the Checkmates CD, We Call It Soul is out now on Rabbit Factory, Inc.

The Checkmates aren’t the only star attraction lined-up for the evening.

Old school Atlanta funk maestro Hermon Hitson also performs. Hitson is best known for his collaboration with Jimi Hendrix on the production of Hendrix’s album, Free Spirit. Since the ’60s he has performed with alongside Bobby Womack, Wilson Pickett, Major Lance, Jackie Wilson, The Drifters, The Shirelles, Joe Tex and The Midnighters.

Here’s a montage set to Hitson’s song, “Ain’t No Other Way.”

Also on hand will be Ralph “Soul” Jackson. Hailing from Southern Alabama, Jackson recorded six rare soul 45s that are now highly sought after artifacts. Jackson began his recording career in the ’60s when he received a call from Rick Hall at FAME Studios who wanted to record his song, “Don’t Tear Yourself Down.”

Here’s some footage of Jackson performing at The Bottletree in Birmingham, AL in 2006.

The “Down in the Basement” DJs Agent 45 and Tim Lawrence  will also be on hand spinning records between sets. And as per usual there will be an array of multimedia visuals provided by Fringe Factory hosts Vikki V. and Suzy Q.

Fringe Factory: Spanish invasion Saturday at Highland Inn

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

It’s that time once again. This Saturday night the much lauded Fringe Factory returns for one more go-around.

This weekend the regular hostesses / DJs Suzy Q and Vikki V present a night of music that is both inspired by and paying homage to the Spanish and Latin American influences that have colored garage rock, punk and psychedelic culture since the 1960s.

DJ Sergio Bastida comes all the way from Granada, Spain by way of a temporary stay in Wilmington, DE to spin records at this weekend’s Fringe Factory festivities.

Also, local gringo act, El Cobra Negro perform a set of surf rock riffage that’s tempered with Bossa nova beats.

More details will be announced as they develop.

Cost is $5 before 10 p.m. and $7 after. Or it’s $5 if you come dressed in vintage or “vintage-inspired” attire.

Doors open at 9 p.m. For more information look online The Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge, located at 644 N. Highland Ave. 404-874-5756.

Fringe Factory turns funky this Saturday at Highland Inn

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

This Saturday night Fringe Factory returns to The Highland Inn Ballroom with yet another themed party. This time around it’s the “Summer Love Revelation,” and word on the street is that it’s a mushroom themed party. What exactly that means remains to be determined, but the interior of the ballroom will be decorated with some pretty ambitious and elaborate mushroom decorations that the ladies of Fringe Factory spent a lot of time putting together, so it will be worth checking out for the props alone.

DJ Soulmarcosa from North Carolina heads up the turntables with a set of vintage rock and roll, mod rock et. al., and special guest DJ Jared Swilley of the Black Lips fills in with a set of doo-wop and rock and roll records.

Swilley’s infamously reckless other band The Gaye Blades are also set to perform. The last few shows they’ve done have been unexpectedly tight, so this one is not to be missed, especially since this is their last show together before guitar player and Rob’s House Records owner Trey Lindsay moves away to go to school in New York City.

There will also be music provided by hosts and resident DJs Suzy Q & Vikki V., as well as a psychedelic light show and vintage, 16mm visuals provided by the OP SHOPPE.

The party starts at 9 p.m. and the Gaye Blades go on around 11:00 p.m. Cover is $7. The Highland Inn Ballroom is located at 644 N. Highland Ave. For more information look online at www.myspace.com/highlandinnloungeatlanta.
