Janelle Monae’s pre-Grammy pool dive at the Mondrian hotel

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

She may not have returned home with a Grammy, but Janelle Monae still made a big splash from the looks of it.

Check out this footage of her poolside performance at L.A.’s Mondrian hotel, spotted at ArjanWrites.com. As the four-minute mark approaches, she’s spotted climbing out of the pool — apparently after diving in — then proceeding to climb a tree.

2009 Grammy Awards: More collabos than a mofo

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Seems like there was more action behind-the-scenes than onstage, despite the 20-plus performances at this year’s Grammy Awards.

Chris Brown reportedly got gangsta with his girlfriend Rihanna, causing them both to cancel their performances. The alleged reason behind the smackdown should bring a whole new meaning to their upcoming collabo, “Bad Girl,” produced by Atlantan Polow da Don for the Confessions of a Shopaholic soundtrack. Meanwhile the real “gangstas,” Lil Wayne and T.I., delivered upstanding, redemptive performances — neither of which required NARAS President Neil Portnow to excuse their inclusion in the program, the way he had to when Eminem performed to the chagrin of gay rights activists in 2001.

Of course, the Recording Academy continued this year with the ultra-lame generational mashup theme that made for some of the oddest pairings ever.

Surely, Stevie Wonder would’ve been insulted if only he could’ve seen how silly he looked on stage with the Jonas Brothers. The Al Green/Justin Timberlake pairing was quite a yawner, but perhaps we should be thankful that Timberlake didn’t attempt to rip Green’s shirt off for a grand finale. And did we really need to see B.B. King and John Mayer trade ugly guitar faces for the second year in a row?

Pop quiz: Dallas Austin at the Georgia Grammy party

Friday, February 6th, 2009

We tossed Dallas Austin a few CL Lust List questions when we walked the red carpet at the Georgia Grammy party last week. The genre-bending producer is currently awaiting the March 31 release of Eight Days a Weekend — his film/CD. “It’s like an album you watch,” he says.

Name one band from the past you wish you could’ve performed with.
The Time

What’s your favorite karaoke song?
Lionel Richie’s “Still.”

High school: Best years ever or living nightmare?
Living nightmare. ’Cause I didn’t want to be there; I’d rather be at the studio.

When was the last time you had sex?
This morning.

Most attractive feature of the opposite sex?
Feet. It doesn’t matter how pretty she is, if her feet are bad it’s just the worst.

The Grammy Awards air 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8 on CBS.

Anthony David’s Grammy party: Atlanta’s invited

Friday, February 6th, 2009

With over 30 Grammy nominations going to Georgia artists, the Peach State will be well-represented at Sunday’s Grammy Awards (airing at 8 p.m. on CBS). But Anthony David won’t be there, he told the AJC this week:

“It just started getting to be a little expensive, thinking about flying my mom and everybody out there. So I just decided to stay here and party with the fam[ily]”.

David’s Sunday night viewing party at Cafe Circa (464 Edgewood Ave.) is also open to the public. RSVP at muddywatermgmt@gmail.com. For more information, call 404-477-0008. R&B singer/songwriter David and long-time collaborator India.Arie are nominated together in the Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals category for their song, “Words.” CL wrote about the song and it’s fortuitous trek to commercial radio last year.

Pop Quiz: Big Boi at the Georgia Grammy party

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

CL caught up with Big Boi at the Georgia Grammy nominees celebration, so we decided to test some of our upcoming Lust List questions out on him.

Name one band from the past you wish you could’ve been in?
Parliament Funkadelic

Favorite karaoke song?
“Ebony Eyes” by Rick James and Smokey Robinson

Best place in Atlanta to show out-of-towners?
Right now, Atlantic Station is pretty cool. They got a nice little vibe over there with Cirque du Soleil and everything. My all-time favorite has always been Little Five Points.

Most attractive feature on the opposite sex?
I’d have to say her brain, fa sho.

What’s the worst thing somebody can do on a date?
Not suckin’ no dick — that’s just a joke though! I don’t know, man, keep stopping by the gas station or something. Just be all the way ready.

Big Boi is nominated for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group for the song, “Royal Flush,” featuring Andre 3000 and Raekwon. Stay tuned for more Lust List Q&As from Georgia Grammy nominees. The 51st Annual Grammy Awards air 8 p.m. Sun., Feb. 8 on CBS. CL’s Lust List issue drops next week.
