David Guetta ought to know, don’t let Lil Jon near the DJ booth

lil-jon-guetta-2

There’s no doubt in my mind David Guetta wanted the first stop in his US tour to be Atlanta. Last night’s show at Opera had a number of surprises, including a two-song cameo by Atlanta-based singer Chris Willis, who’s worked with the Parisian DJ on a handful of his better known anthems. But the crowd, packed nice and tight into the main room, didn’t quite expect the crunkmaster himself, Lil Jon, to make an appearance. Again. And again. And once more towards the end. And finally, when the lights came on, and the security guard was ushering the Guettablaster from the booth, to chants of “one more song.”

Succumbing to the massive peer pressure, the headphones where unpacked, the cables were plugged back, and Guetta’s “Sexy Bitch ” came back on the sounds. Only this time, it’s the remix. The Chuckie Remix, with who else but Atlanta’s own Lil Jon.

Of course, the man  jumps in the booth along with DG, except the juice got the best of dude, prompting him to get in the way of the housemaster and his tools, spinning the record back (twice!) for the frenzied crowd.

Too bad it was 3 a.m. and this is Georgia. Security shut it down right as the track was in mid build up!

So now you know, beware of dreads and gold teeth near the DJ booth, ’cause Lil Jon may mess up your encore.

2009 BET Hip-Hop Awards: Atlanta’s albatross

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Which came first, the BET Hip-Hop Awards or Atlanta’s steady flow of garbage-ass rap music?

The chicken-or-the-egg question occurred to me as I watched last night’s broadcast of the awards show, which should’ve been renamed the Gucci Mane Awards for the number of performances (3?) featuring the East Atlanta-bred MC.

It typified a night in which the show took every possible opportunity to reference Atlanta — which is odd considering the crowd is made up entirely of industry fucks (artists, publicists, label reps, promoters, radio heads, etc.) and almost zero fans. (more…)

Lil Jon, Internet-savvy comedian

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

While the world waits for Lil Jon’s long-delayed Crunk Rock, the dreadlocked producer/barker has seemingly embarked on a career as a comedian. Several days ago, I told you about a claymation cartoon that featured his distinctively crusty voice. Now he has a cartoon series, “Lil Jon’s A’Town,” that debuts New Year’s Eve on Funnyordie.com, a comedy site produced by Gary Sanchez Productions, a company owned by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy. “Lil Jon’s A’Town”? I’m laughing already.

According to a post on Wooohah.com, the show will be posted on both Funnyordie.com and, in case you don’t feel like wading through dozens of skits featuring Judd Apatow and Ted Danson, Lil Jon’s MySpace page. For a preview, check out “Terminal Bling,” a skit he recently made for the site.

A Lil Jon Xmas

It’s been four years since Lil Jon released Crunk Juice, and more than a year since his “Snap Yo Fingers” single with E-40 dominated the airwaves. We’re still waiting for that long-delayed Crunk Rock album, but Lil Jon hasn’t been completely absent from the charts. He gave California pop-rapper Baby Bash’s “Cyclone” the Lil Jon treatment. (T-Pain’s on it, too.) It hasn’t gotten much local airplay, but kids elsewhere seem to love it, and it’s on the Billboard top 10 singles chart.

If pop rap isn’t your thing, then you can watch Lil Jon narrate an episode of “AE Winter Tales,” a series of claymation short films on apparel manufacturer American Eagle Outfitters’ website. He lends his distinctively crusty voice to “Snowman,” a cute tale about a snowman who comes alive and chases after a bunch of kids. And no, the Snowman doesn’t look like Lil Jon. You can watch the video here.

Where are the ATL superstars?

Friday, August 31st, 2007

I’ve seen scores of release dates for new music this fall, and I’ve noticed that there are few local superstars on the list. Last year seemed full of chart-topping acts, from Ludacris and Young Jeezy to Ciara. But this year may be relatively quiet. Sure, the Black Lips and Shawty Lo are cool, but they aren’t exactly top 10 material (except on critics’ lists, maybe). Keyshia Cole, who recently moved here, gets love but doesn’t really count.

No, I’m talking about the A-list superstars that run A-Town. Namely, what’s up with Usher?

Despite a few teasing comments to MTV, Usher has yet to announce a release date for his first album since 2004’s Confessions. The New York Times just leaked the news that he’ll appear on the season premiere of “Ellen” (alongside Hillary Clinton, no less), which indicates that he’s about to kick the promotional campaign into high gear. The episode broadcasts Monday, Sept. 3. But will it be for a Christmastime bonanza, or an early 2008 comeback?

Here are a few other local stars that may or may not drop albums before the year is out:

1. Big Boi: For much of the year, Big Boi talked about issuing his solo debut in 2007. But Rolling Stone just announced that it won’t come out until February 2008 at the earliest. But he gets a pass for popping up on UGK’s “International Players Anthem,” one of the best singles of the year.

2. Ludacris: Luda is still telling people to wait for his next album, Theater of the Mind. But, in my opinion, that will probably depend on whether he can come up with a few hit singles to launch the album properly, and whether he can finish those songs in the next month or so. If not, he’ll probably wait until next year.

3. Lil Jon: Crunk Rock has been in the works for nearly three years now. Last month, Lil Jon told Billboard that he has finished tracks with Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, Remy Ma, the Game, Gucci Mane, Fabo from D4L, P.O.D., Ciara, Ice Cube and R. Kelly. Lots of stars, sure, but when will the damn thing finally come out? He says it will arrive before the end of the year but, again, no release date.

4. Bow Wow: The artist formerly known as Lil Bow Wow hasn’t moved major units in a minute. But with his devoted teen base and history of radio hits, he’s still a threat to do so. He’s teaming up with another teen idol, Omarion, for the collaborative album Face Off. It drops via Jive Records Dec. 4.
