Atlanta Burn to Shine house finally destroyed

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

After almost two years of waiting in limbo, Burn to Shine Atlanta is back on. The house at 54 Moreland Ave., where the Atlanta installment of directors Brendan Canty (Fugazi) and Chrisoph Green’s Burn to Shine series was filmed on July 29, 2007, came crashing down at 9 o’clock this morning.

In a nutshell, Canty and Green’s Burn to Shine works like this: They find a house in a city that is on the verge of being demolished in the name of urban progress. They fill it with as many of the strongest bands from the local music scene that they can round-up, film them playing in said house, and when all is said and done they document the house’s destruction. Atlanta is number six in the series and falls on the heels of Washington D.C., Chicago, Portland, Louisville, Ky., and Seattle.

Bands who performed for the Atlanta shoot include the Liverhearts, Selmanaires, Shannon Wright, Deerhunter, Black Lips, Delia Gartrell, Mighty Hannibal, Coathangers, Carbonas, All Night Drug Prowling Wolves, Snowden and Mastodon.

A gallery of photos from the sweltering, sweat-soaked day spent in the Hepatitis factory of a house can be found at chadrad.blogspot.com

Over the two years that have passed since they filmed in Atlanta, Canty and Green have fully edited the audio and video from whole day, and now that the house has been demolished they hope to have the DVD released by the end of the summer.

Mastodon: trampled under hooves high-tops

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Like so many great artists who have gone before them — Bad Brains, KISS, Iron Maiden and Slayer — Mastodon is finally being immortalized in shoe.

An ad appearing in this month’s Decibel magazine (pictured above) shows off a pair of black high-tops that feature artist Paul Romano’s cover art for Blood Mountain. There will also be a slip-on shoe that features the artwork from Mastodon’s latest album, Crack the Skye. Both shoes are rumored to be hitting the shelves on Mon., July 6 (according to NME).

Killick reveals Exsanguinette teaser featuring Mastodon’s Brann Dailor

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Kyle Dawkins recently completed a short video clip to preview the forthcoming Exsanguinette album, which features an impressive lineup of like-minded musicians fronted by Killick (Eric Hinds) playing guitar, along with Brann Dailor of Mastodon (drums), Liz Allbee (trumpet) and Larry Ochs of Rova Saxophone Quartet (sax).

The finished product is still about a month away, but in the meantime this teaser video offers a pretty tantalizing preview of things to come.

We Fun hits Pitchfork.tv

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Starting this Friday, director Matthew Robison’s Atlanta music documentary We Fun will be playing on Pitchfork.TV for one week and one week only. Inside sources tell us that this will be a slightly edited version from what screened last month as part of the Atlanta Film Festival.

To get specific about it, the much ballyhooed flaming vagina scene has been trimmed considerably.

Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor collaborates with Killick

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Athens-based Appalachian trance metal guitarist/improv artist Killick’s (Erik Hinds) forthcoming full-length Exsanguinette (sic), features an impressive lineup of like-minded players accompanying his guitar playing, including Brann Dailor of Mastodon (drums), Liz Allbee (trumpet) and Larry Ochs (of Rova Saxophone Quartet) on sax. For lack of a better term, the music is insane. The CD will be released in a limited press of only 1,000 copies, featuring artwork by Watson Atkinson, photos by Rinne Allen and an old-school trash metal cassette demo J-card style insert. The recording is due out in June on Killick’s Solponticello label.

The idea for the project came about shortly after Killick suffered through a nasty bout of internal bleeding that left him hospitalized for several days, and greatly influenced this forthcoming release. According to Killick, “The music explores the idea of bleeding as purging, change, and renewal.

“Bloodletting” excerpt mp3

Chad Radford: What happened to you in June?

Killick: “I woke up one day feeling “lazy” for lack of a better word. My physical state deteriorated rapidly, and by 6 p.m., I was in the hospital where I stayed for five days. I had a bleeding Duodenal ulcer … silent, painless caused by a bacteria called H. Pylori. I could have gotten the bacteria anywhere at any point from when I was born until right up to then. I lost over half my blood. It’s thought that many, many people around the world have H. Pylori, though it typically doesn’t cause any problems. Having Celiac disease may make me more susceptible than the average person. Celiac disease is a lifelong intolerance to the gluten protein Gliadin, found in wheat, barley and rye plus there’s a closely related protein in oats. They are poison to my body. The trick is avoiding not only the obvious foods, but almost all processed food has small amounts in it, which is too much for me. I’ve been gluten-free for four years. … I’m used to it. The social dimension is harder on other people than it is me. People feel bad that I can’t eat what they prepare. I also can’t drink alcohol or eat spicy foods, or tomatoes or oranges or almonds, or refined sugar, or caffeine. I also can’t take any aspirin or Ibuprofen or anything like it. I tell people I’ll make up for it in another life.

Photos: Indigo Girls and Mastodon at Criminal Records

Monday, March 30th, 2009

On March 24, two very different Atlanta bands celebrated their record releases at Criminal Records with in-store performances just hours apart. Grammy Award-winning folk duo the Indigo Girls celebrated the release of their new record Poseidon and the Bitter Bug playing a six-song set at 4:30 p.m. followed by a 40-minute 8:30 p.m. set by Grammy-nominated metal band Mastodon. The latter was celebrating the release of its record Crack the Skye. The appearance of the two bands was Criminal’s second busiest day in its 18 years in Little 5 Points (the first was last year’s Record Store Day). “This kind of pairing is extraordinarily out of the ordinary, but at Criminal it made perfect sense,” said Criminal Records owner Eric Levine.

Interview: Bill Kelliher of Mastodon

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

The following interview with Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Bill Kelliher was conducted at noon on Wednesday, March 11.

Chad: You got sick in Europe last year while you were on tour with Slayer. What happened?
Bill Kelliher: It was an undisclosed stomach ailment. People have speculated about what it was, but I can’t really talk about it.

Really?
Yeah, as a band we decided not to talk about it, so I can’t. It was a big shake-up and the band had to play as a three-piece while I recovered. We had a big decision to make about whether we were going to loose a lot of money or not. We had just flown over there. We rented the gear, rented the bus and if we would have sent everybody home when I got sick it would have cost us a fortune. The band was looking to loose a whole lot of dough and they asked me what I wanted them to do. They said we’ll play if we have to, and they did. The next few shows were in Germany and we were playing first, so it was a half-an-hour set, which goes by pretty quickly when your playing songs back-to-back like we do. So it wasn’t that big of a deal. They did it and I healed up.

That was the second scare you guys have had in the last couple of years, the first being what happened with Brent in Las Vegas.
Yeah, when I heard about what happened to Brent I was holding my breath and just kind of hoping and waiting for everything to be OK. This band is my life, and I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have it. We were all wondering what was going to happen. But I didn’t sell my guitars or anything. I was banking on him being OK and then we heard from him a week or so later and he was going to make it, so it came as a huge relief. But yeah, we were all hoping and praying that he would pull through. We didn’t really know what else to do. … We’re lucky. Some bands don’t bounce back from that kind of shit.

Interview: Troy Sanders of Mastodon

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Mastodon's Troy Sanders (right)

The following interview with Mastodon bass player and vocalist Troy Sanders was conducted at noon on Friday, Feb. 30 while en route to Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q.

Chad: Let’s talk about Crack the Skye. I’m familiar with the stories that shaped the album from Brann and Brent’s perspectives, but what’s your take?

Troy: With all of our previous records we’ve been happy with the end results, but collectively speaking we’re more excited and proud of this one than anything we’ve done before. It feels good that we’re still excited to be playing music and still pushing ourselves to tread new waters. It consumes us and we’re all immersed in the Mastodon lifestyle. It’s nine years later and five records down the line [including the Call of the Mastodon compilation of early material], and the fire that burns in all four of our guts is yet to be extinguished.

Crack the Skye finds Mastodon on the haunt

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009
Brann Dailor (left), Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds, and Troy Sanders.

STILL STANDING: Brann Dailor (left), Bill Kelliher, Brent Hinds, and Troy Sanders.

For nearly 10 years, Brann Dailor and Brent Hinds have served as two equal but wholly opposite forces fueling the fiery dirges of Atlanta’s metal behemoth, Mastodon.

While Dailor’s fast, complex movements as a drummer are the flipside to his reserved and somewhat aloof demeanor, Hinds is a mad dog. His bark is every bit as mean and loud as the malevolent guitar thunder he commands. Over the years, his public brawls with a music journalist and other rockers have made him the stuff of legend.

“If you ask for it, I’m down for the dealing, and I will definitely hand you the price tag!” he offers coldly.

When anchored against Dailor’s precise musicianship and persona, the two function as a powerful machine whose real-life tragedies and traumas are manifested in Mastodon’s fourth full-length album, Crack the Skye.

It’s the first time that the group has exercised such a noticeable compositional restraint. Though the riffs and rhythms are massive, each song on the release comes together with focused melodies and slower tempos compared to the prog showiness and experimental chaos of the band’s previous album, Blood Mountain. Cleaner vocals and sprawling white space sandBrannwiched between stinging guitar assaults define the ethereal qualities of Crack the Skye. If Blood Mountain was the group’s homage to earth, and previous albums Leviathan and Remission honored water and fire, respectively, Crack the Skye flies into the stratosphere and beyond.

Mastodon to play free in-store at Criminal

Monday, March 9th, 2009

To celebrate the release of their fourth coming, Brendan O’Brien produced full-length album, Crack the Skye, Atlanta metal behemoth Mastodon has announced that the group will play a free, live in-store performance at Criminal Records on Tues., March 24 at 8:30 p.m. — the date the album is officially released in the U.S.

If you attended any of the shows at Criminal’s mini-metal fest the night before the Scion Rock Fest on Fri., Feb. 27, than you know that space will be limited and hair will be flying like helicopter blades.

Bring ear plugs and be sure to get there early or get stuck outside.

Neurosis, Mastodon et. al. rock Scion fest.

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Mastodon brought the Scion Rock Fest to a crashing finale on Saturday night. Scott Kelley from Neurosis made a cameo at the end of their set tearing through “Aqua Dementia” from Leviathan, “Crack the Skye” from their forthcoming full-length and “Crystal Skull” from Blood Mountain; which was preceded by an announcement from guitarist Brent Hinds that the cops were there to shut everything down.

Indeed they played slightly beyond 11 o’clock, but the show ended without incident.

In Purgatory inside the club, Zoroaster brought their set to a close with a noisy cluster of feedback and chaos after technical difficulties inspired bass player /vocalist Brent Anderson to kick over his entire bass rig. At some point during the melee a drum cymbal stand was propelled upward like a rocket and stabbed drummer Dan Scanlan in the roof of his mouth (which was pretty hardcore).  Afterward he looked dazed, but appeared to be no worse for the wear as he smoked cigarettes and recalled the story. At a metal festival of such caliber there’s bound to be some carnage.

Speaking of carnage, Norwegian black metal band 1349 wrapped up their set across the hall in Hell, shortly after the Zoroaster incident. Rumor had it that they had adorned their stage with severed pig heads mounted on spikes. If they were there the crowd had devoured them before I made my way into the room. At the end, vocalist Ravn lurched at the crowd in full corpse paint and blood stained hands, slapping high fives and grunting a ghastly war cry.

This was the real deal on all fronts. After stellar performances from Neurosis, Wolves in the Throne Room, Boris, Kylesa, Torche and so many others there was a feeling of wasted annihilation in the air, as though Cloverfield had paid a visit to the Masquerade Music Park and left a massive footprint in the dark red mud that stained so many shoes and pant legs of concert goers who filed out with ringing ears and a touch of whiplash.

‘Blue Eyed Devil’ country musical plays at the Earl

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

East Atlanta’s Earl doesn’t usually host musicals (and I don’t think they’re planning on booking Cats or Phantom of the Opera anytime soon), so this Thursday’s show should be out-of-the-ordinary for everyone involved. The Last of the Blue Eyed Devils is a musical of country tunes from members of County Hell, Mastodon, and West End Motel.

They’ve written a cycle of songs that might not end up on Broadway anytime soon, but definitely tell a story set to rootsy, Americana-tinged tunes. “It’s the closest thing I’ve ever done to a musical,” songwriter Tom Cheshire told me earlier this morning. “It’s based on my grandfather, actually. He was a Chilean sailor and each of the songs are based on travels and late nights that I read about in his journal. Like any good musical, there’s a little bit of love, a little bit of laughter, and a lot of loss.”

The band counts six members among them, including Jeff Moore on banjo and pedal steel, Brent Hinds on guitar, and the singing debut of Meredith Griffeth. In case you’ve heard the stories (yes, plural), local ne’er-do-well Brent Hinds has promised to stay out of any fights, at least until after the show. Considering that they’ll be trying something new, Cheshire explained, “We’ll all be on our best behavior.”

Anna Kramer & the Lost Cause open with a special, acoustic set. Thu., Feb. 26. 9 p.m. $7. The Earl. 488 Flat Shoals Ave. www.badearl.com.

New We Fun trailer released

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Earlier today producer/director Matthew Robison sent Crib Notes a new cut of the trailer for the forthcoming Atlanta rock scene documentary, We Fun.

WARNING: The trailer features a few swear words, so if you are at work put on a pair of headphones.
