DOOM postscript: ‘The character that I hired, he got paid for it’

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I’m a little late on this, but it looks like DOOM has finally, unequivocally, admitted that other people have performed for him at his shows.

HipHopDX: So just to get it out of the way, can you address the recent scandal where you were allegedly sending an impostor to perform in your mask at DOOM concerts?

DOOM: [Laughs] Alright. Here’s how I look at it, because the wording in there is kinda funny. “Impostor.” Impostor would imply that the character. I liken it to this: I’m a director as well as a writer. I choose different characters, I choose their direction and where I want to put them. So who I choose to put as the character is up to me. The character that I hired, he got paid for it. There’s no impostor.

MF Doom’s new album is fucking ridiculous

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

MF Doom — or simply DOOM, as he now wants to be known — is back after a long hiatus, particularly for someone so prolific. One thing we know for sure: His new album Born Like This is performed by him, not a masked impersonator. The album dropped yesterday, and I’m listening to it for the first time here. I’ve live-blogged my thoughts below, borrowing Byron Crawford’s format.

“Supervillain Intro” “Doom’s got a plan that’s gonna shake the heavens,” a WWE-voiced announcer tells us. Let’s hope so. He adds: “Time to get the feta!”

“Gazillion Ear” One of two J Dilla beats here. It’s pretty hot, with kind of an eerie/haunted carnival/David Lynch vibe.

“Ballskin” Now we’re talking! This Jake One beat is even hotter than “Trap Door,” from the Seattle producer’s 2008 album White Van Music, which Wikipedia tells me only sold 9,859 copies. That number makes me want to run myself over with a van (of any color). Wait, is this track already over?

“Yessir!” The Raekwon joint, and he definitely doesn’t phone it in. Doom’s beat is really repetitive and annoying, though. He may have phoned it in, whatever that could mean.

“Absolutely” The only Madlib beat here. I’m feeling it. In fact, this whole thing has a Madvillainy vibe so far. That can’t be a bad thing, right? I could do without the Cops sample at the end of the song, however. Is that honky policeman supposed to sound dramatic? Are they making fun of him? Why not just sample Reno 911, then?

Thom Yorke gives DOOM the remix treatment

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Could this be the beginnings of a buddy-cop flick?

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has put his own spin on a song from DOOM (formerly known as MF Doom), the Atlanta-based underground MC with the cult-following.

The original version of the song titled “Gazzillion Ear” is scheduled to appear on DOOM’s March 24 release, Born Like This. The remix will be included as a bonus track on the iTunes downloaded version of the album.

Listen to a snippet at Pitchfork.com. Stay tuned for CL’s upcoming feature on DOOM.

MF Doom: The saga continues

Friday, January 11th, 2008

mf-doom-poster-rasterized-1.jpgIn case you still haven’t read our story on the MF Doom concert at MJQ, here’s a quick recap and some new info about Doom’s alleged Doombots plot.

Atlanta promoter Randy Castello had heard all the accusations that rapper MF Doom sometimes lip-synchs at his concerts, and has even sent impersonators in his place. But when Castello, a huge Doom fan, got the opportunity to put together a concert featuring the masked MC, he was undeterred.

“I was going into the show thinking that I’m going to be that guy who pulls off a successful MF Doom show,” he says.

But it was not to be. As we reported in this week’s paper, fans are again angrily accusing Doom of sending someone else to rap in his place at his mid-December show at MJQ Concourse. “There’s no way it was MF Doom,” concert-goer Jeff Hoffman says.

Castello even accuses Doom’s entourage of stealing his percentage of the door receipts. In the angry missive he sent out via MySpace, he listed a phone number and address that he says belong to Doom, and encouraged show attendees to pursue a refund directly from him.

Doom himself could not be reached for comment, and we don’t know what really happened that night, although videos of the show posted to a blog called the Kaos Effect (by Senor Kaos) make a pretty convincing case for irregularities. There’s no doubt, however, that something smells funky in Doomland.

The Atlanta-area rapper, who got his start alongside his younger brother in KMD and went on to Billboard success with an Adult Swim-sponsored collaboration with DJ Danger Mouse, has long been accused of reneging on business deals and forsaking former friends and collaborators such as MF Grimm. (Read more in this Village Voice story.)

But things got especially hairy in 2007. After the San Francisco show in August where he was accused of not showing up, he missed a New York concert in September and it was announced that he was in the hospital. His label Stones Throw quickly issued a statement claiming that was not the case.

It gets better. According to a rumor posted on the blog Fake Shore Drive, this may be part of an elaborate marketing scheme designed to promote Doom’s next album:

“…this past weekend C-Rayz Walz, a frequent Doom collaborator and old friend, was here in Chicago and we were discussing Doom and his antics. C-Rayz claims that Doom is an absolute genius and is sending out these fake Doom’s to gear up for the release of his next album ‘Doompostor.’ Apparently, on the next album Doom will discuss this in-depth (but when have you heard Doom discuss anything in-depth?)”

Who knows what the future holds for this guy. But whatever it is, it should be pretty damn interesting.

Masked confusion: MF Doom pisses off Tight Bros.

DOOMSDAY: MF Doom on the cover of his 2004 collaboration album, Madvillainy, with producer Madlib.

I told you so.

Hate to say it, but I heard through the digital grapevine (e-mail/MySpace) that Tight Bros. promoter Randy Castello was only one of many pissed people after MF Doom’s lip-synched performance at MJQ last Thursday, Dec. 13.

I wasn’t there to see it for myself, but sort of predicted as much in our Holiday Guide preview of MF Doom’s show that ran a couple of weeks ago. (Click here to read it.)

Anyway, thanks to Marc Crifasi (formerly of WRAS-FM [88.5] and Criminal Records), who reposted Randy’s original MySpace post. Funny stuff. Although my gut tells me that it’s all a part of Doom’s act.

To be continued, perhaps…

Subject: Repost: MF Doom in not a nice person
Body: On top of this when I called the number he kept trying to offer me a Macy’s gift card. What a dick!

Many apologies go to all of you who came out to the MF DOOM show last night at MJQ and paid $30 of your hard earned money only to watch him lip sinc (sic) for 20 minutes at 1:30 in the morning. This was by far one of the single worst experiences I’ve had as a club promoter and I sincerely apologize if you walked away feeling cheated. To make matters even worse MF DOOMS appointed doorman took off with all the money from the door after the show! As soon as we realized the money was stolen we decided to help ourselves to all of MF DOOMS merchandise which included a bunch of T shirts and posters. So, in an effort to make it up to everyone who walked away feeling cheated, we’re giving away all the merchandise for free so come and get it while supplies last!! And if that’s not enough, feel free to let MF DOOM aka Daniel Dumile know how you really feel by calling him at his home in Kennesaw Georgia.
