The Woodruff Arts Center is booking younger local musicians to perform in Sifly Piazza every Thursday night throughout the month of June. These free “Nights on the Piazza” shows will kick off at 5 p.m. and three young local acts will play until around 8 p.m.
The first of the series starts tomorrow night (Thurs., June 4) with performances by Nerdkween (5:30 p.m.), Tealights (6:30 p.m.) and Hope For Agoldensummer (7:30 p.m.).
“This is something I’ve wanted to see happen for a long time because I feel like there are a lot of people my age (28) who are very interested in art/music, but don’t see the Arts Center as some place they want to go,” says WAC’s Strategic Communications Manager, Kathleen Covington. “We hope by giving them an introduction with the free concerts, they will see that there really is a lot here that they would enjoy.”

Noot d’ Noot has just released the video for latest number “Fingers Like Steeples,” which also appeared as part of CL’s the Mixt A downloadable mixtape last month. The song will be featured on the group’s forthcoming Cash For Gold 12-inch, due out June 16, with a record release party to follow at the Earl on June 20.
Once again 97 Estoria is celebrating their annual Estoria fest this Saturday, May 9.
The show is free and the music is scheduled to being sometime in the neighborhood of 4-4:30 p.m. Bands performing this year include: Noot d’ Noot, Rizzudo, GG King, All the Saints, Hawks and Predator.
Half of this year’s line-up can be heard on Creative Loafing’s the Mixt A vol. 1 compilation.

Starting this Saturday night (Jan. 17th) Noot d’ Noot will kick off a monthly series of DJ nights in the MJQ cafe, dubbed Science Fiction.
Each of these nights promises to be, according to the Noot’s blog, “Dance music for people who dance selected by people who make dance music for people to dance to.” One thing the group’s drummer Mathis Hunter (a.k.a. Bimbi Smoofus) stresses is that this is not just another mashup night, but an evening of musicians spinning songs in their entirety. So in essence there will be a little something for the true school music heads who want to groove on some deep jams and some deep thoughts, that will also keep the dance floor moving.

Local bands and DJs are coming together to raise funds and awareness after a Dec. 3 home invasion in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood rattled both the community and Atlanta music scene.
On Thursday night at 9 p.m. at the Highland Inn Ballroom on North Highland Avenue, the Gaye Blades — which includes members of the Black Lips — and Noot d’ Noot, along with a “special surprise guest,” will headline a night of raffle giveaways to benefit local musician and DJ Chris Devoe and community activist Rachael Spiewak of SoPo Bicycle Co-op. Guest DJs will also spin records throughout the night.
Criminal Records, Youngblood Gallery, Sweetgrass Salon, Charis Books & More and other local businesses are contributing items for the raffle.
“Our tagline for the event is ‘It’s a neighborhood watch,’” says Suzy Moran, one of the fundraiser organizers. “We want it to be a benefit [for the victims], but also a way for the community to come together.”
Organizers are requesting a $5 donation at the door to help the victims.

The 4TH WARD AFRO-KLEZMER ORCHESTRA plays exactly what the name promises, a merger of Western and African rhythms and Klezmer-influenced song styles laid down by some of the best jazz hands in Atlanta.
Under the direction of composer/trumpeter Roger Ruzow, the 10-piece ensemble barrels through original arrangements of traditional and exotic sounds. With so many players, 4WAKO features members of dozens of acts, including Noot d’Noot, Cadillac Jones and Gold Sparkle Band.
The group features Colin Bragg (guitar), Chris Case (keyboard), Ben Davis (tenor sax), Jeff Crompton (alto sax / clarinet), Ben Gettys (bass), Bill Nittler (baritone sax / clarinet), Keith Leslie (drums), Blake Williams (trombone) and Roger Ruzow (trumpet).
If you didn’t get a chance to witness their debut at Eyedrum a few weeks back, the group is convening once again, this time at The Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge at 664 N. Highland Ave. this Saturday night (Sept. 13 at 9:00 p.m. Admission is $5 and Jude Stevens (A.K.A. Pete DeLorenzo of Gringo Star) opens the show.
The illustrious and ill-named “Worming the Starhole” monthly summer pairings of Noot d’ Noot and Judi Chicago at Lenny’s are coming to an end this Saturday, Aug. 16.
Judi Chicago takes a low road into pomp and spectacle where costumes and stage antics are the stars of the show. The Atlanta duo gives plenty of nods to classic house music and pop culture while providing the perfect soundtrack and stage show for a Saturday night dance party at Lenny’s.
Noot d’ Noot follows a much more tolerable musical path of tricked-out grooves and rhythmic explorations (with a much bigger line-up).
Envision, if you will, a psychedelic middle ground that lies somewhere between Can in the 1970s and Tortoise in the ’90s and you’re somewhere in the right neighborhood.
Throughout the course of these summer residencies both Noot d’ Noot and Judi Chicago have been taking turns opening for each other. For this final Worming session the Noots go first.
Doors open at 9 p.m. and the show starts at 10 p.m. It’s $5 to get in if you’re there before 10 o’clock and $7 after. Chief Acid Officer and DJ DVA open the show.
Now that Noot ‘d Noot’s much anticipated proper debut full-length Goofer Dust (International Hits) has hit the streets the world is getting its first real look at just what Atlanta’s premier party band is all about. Drummer Mathis Hunter (A.K.A. Bimbi Smoofus) and keyboard player Rich Morris (Dream Sanitation) took time out of their day to talk about the atmosphere surrounding the record, and where it’s going from here.
Chad Radford: Did Noot ‘d Noot start as a joke hip-hop band or something like that?
Bimbi Smoofus: No, there was never really a joke. It started as a side project to Good Friday Experiment. We were learning to make beats on the MPC and were trying to use our own music as a sample source. We were using records too, but we were trying to sample ourselves.
CR: Were you doing this because you wanted to sell beats to people?
Dream Sanitation: We were doing it mostly to have fun and make music on Friday nights because the clubs in town weren’t playing the kind of music that we wanted to hear.
Atlanta’s premier space-funk party band, Noot ‘d Noot features members of the Selmanaires, Good Friday Experiment, and too many other forgotten local bands to name.
The Noots create an a cosmic blend of electro and organic beats, that expand the mind and get the party started with deep, psychedelic jams.
The group’s 2006 self-produced, self-released Goofer Dust Mix Tape, has been stepped up to legitimate LP/CD release via International Hits.
According to I-Hits co-owner Shannon Mulvaney the records and CDs should be in stores and available for purchase this evening, hopefully by 6 p.m., and the packaging of the LP is said to be lavish.

“Retail Girls” was recorded in the spring 2008 at The Living Room, by Ed Rawls and Justin McNeight. The song mashes up the music of polyrhythymic funk of Noot d’ Noot and the down South vocal stylings of Grip Plyaz and the pop whir of Muffy. All three parties were brought into the studio for a musical endeavor that was spearheaded by Atlanta DJ Rob Wonder A.K.A. “No Static At All.”
