Pine hosts final free Thursday Star Bar show this week

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Pine Magazine is hosting their final free Thursday night show this week at the Star Bar. Since January ‘08, Pine has brought more than 100 bands to play these shows.

For this last hurrah the lineup features an eclectic roster of acts that includes performances of folk-punk story telling from the Wild, mathy and electronic post-rock via This Piano Plays Itself, brittle and etheral strings/electronic pop tones from Tealights, and the neo-soul/new wave sounds of Night Moves Gold.

There will also be DJ sets from Justin Hughes (Glen Iris, ex-Batata Doce, ex- Lady’s Night, ex-rock*A*Teens) and DJ Press Play.

According to a post that went up on Pine this morning:

Our Star Bar series started with Soundlab 84, ISP and Pine back in January 2008 and, since then, more than 100 bands have played our free First Thursday shows, including: T Model Ford, Missile Command, Club Awesome, Hollow Stars, Hawks, Lay Down Mains, Deleted Scenes, Surfer Blood, Gold Standard, Thy Mighty Contract and many, many, many others. Many. It’s been a lot of fun.

The show is free and the music starts promptly at 10 p.m. The Star Bar, 437 Moreland Ave. 404-681-9018.

Jeffrey Butzer + Midwives reunite for Thursday’s free Pine Magazine show

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

From Pine:

Jeffrey Butzer and Midwives
With a solid following that continues to build in Europe, Asia and the US, Jeffrey Butzer is easily one of Atlanta’s new prized musicians with music that is reminiscent of Gainsbourg’s darker days in France, of the thematic explorations of Galt McDermont, and of songs that create the setting of late nights that are experienced but experimentative, the sort of nights we all wished we had more often. Read more about his new CD here. For our July show, Butzer is joined for a special reunion with his original band The Midwives, but will play a short set of songs off his new album. We’re very excited to hear both sets.

Tous Les Jours
Tous Les Jours is the psychedelic hypno-drone guitar rock project of Ronney Douglas, who has become a fixture in the rapidly growing Atlanta scene. Originally a guitarist in Ocha La Rocha, he now heads Tous Les Jours, and is also in the improvisational Gringo Star side project Pink Police. Tous les Jours’ original recordings are lovely in their minimalist experimentation, with songs that feature little more than a voice and a stripped down guitar to the more expansive tracks complete with an accordion. His full band however, with two guitarists, bassist and drummer, promises to be a much higher energy version of the Ronney’s original concept. You’ll want to see it.

Free. 9 p.m. Star Bar, 437 Moreland Ave. 404-681-9018. More about the rest of the line-up following the jump.

Holly Lang’s ultimate mixtape

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Holly Lang – Founding editor of Pine Magazine

My mixtape:

Brigette Bardot “Ça Pourrait Changer” Best of Bardot
Blackalicious “Chemical Calisthenics” Blazing Arrow
Les Savy Fav “Wake Up” The Cat and the Cobra
Galt MacDermot “Coffee Cold” Shapes of Rhythm
Serge Gainsbourg “Ballade de Melody Nelson” L’Histoire De Melody Nelson
Margo Guryan “Someone I Know” Take a Picture
Neutral Milk Hotel “Aeroplane Over the Sea” In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Toshack Highway “The Sounds and the Times”
Magnetic Morning (split with Sianspheric/Aspirin Age)
Deerhunter “Rainwater Cassette Exchange” Rainwater Cassette Exchange
Dr. Dog “Little Bird” Passed Away, Vol. 1

My favorite Atlanta band? I’d have to say Club Awesome. Easily one of the more fun bands around, they tend to go ridiculously balls out at their shows, complete with weird outfits and strange showmanship. But while many bands who use props and costumes during shows tend to lack in skill and talent, Club Awesome is actually pretty good. Their new album Dynamos is as energetic as the band, and features that atypical style of pop that separates them from most the other bands ‘round these here parts. Plus they sometimes have pool parties at their shows. Who doesn’t like to get half-naked and wet while watching a band play?
