Roll Call: Philip Frobos of Carnivores

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

For today’s Roll Call we call out Philip Frobos of Carnivores.

Who are you?
I’m Philip Frobos, and I play bass and sing for CARNIVORES (used to be Chainestereo). I also play bass with those Untied States kids. I like dead culture, cheese grits and David Bowie.

Describe yourself in three words.
Rambunctious, Paranoid, Blue

Who — dead or alive — would most you like to meet?
I’d like to roll with Nancy Sinatra back in her heyday, I wanna be her Lee Hazelwood. That record Nancy & Lee destroys me, if you can find it on the internet you should get the bonus track that doesn’t come on the LP called “Arkansas Coal.” I don’t know how they wrote that song, it might as well be an epic, but not like lame epic rock.

Who would you most like to slap in the face?
Dj Dj Dj Dylan. He wouldn’t get an Oh Snap picture with me. Maybe next week.

What song do you wish you had written?
It’s probably a tie between ELO’s “Showdown” and Jobim’s “The Girl from Ipanema.”

Elvis Costello or Elvis Presley?
Costello.

LP, CD or MP3?
My favorite is LP, since I moved to Atlanta I’ve been building up a decent collection. I like that its a little more engaging, I like to think of records as two parts. Although I do love my morning on Marta with my iPod. It’s a toss up, those new LPs that come with the mp3 download card are brilliant!

If you could start one trend, what would it be?
Bring the word “Rad” back up to its former dynasty in “cool” synonyms. Also bring “Game On” from Wayne’s World back, but then I probably wouldn’t want to say them anymore. How about Swatch?

If you could end one trend, what would it be?
Overly HUGE sunglasses that hide ugly girls’ faces. Those things are as good as beer goggles but you don’t even get to be drunk.

With whom would you most like to play a game of spin the bottle?
Zooey Deschanel. She seems like a pretty rad kid.

“A Crime”

Carnivores plays the Pine Magazine showcase at The Star Bar on Thurs., Dec. 4. Free. 9 p.m.

Julien Temple discusses Joe Strummer

Monday, November 12th, 2007

strummerposter12.jpg Despite his indelible association with the punk movement, rock filmmaker Julien Temple didn’t become friends with Joe Strummer until the final years of the Clash co-founder, who died in 2002 at age 50. Temple’s documentary, Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten, deftly chronicles Strummer’s life, giving equal weight to the wilderness years that followed the Clash’s breakup in the 1980s. They shared a love of the Glastonbury festival, chronicled in Temple’s recent documentary.

Film critic Curt Holman has written insightful reviews of both The Future Is Unwritten (opening today, Nov. 9, at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema) and Glastonbury. I recently got a chance to interview Temple (The Filth and the Fury) and discuss his latest work and the challenge of making a compelling rock biography.

Also, feel free to check out my review of Pat Gilbert’s excellent Clash bio, Passion Is a Fashion: The Real Story of the Clash, while I was at Gambit Weekly in New Orleans.

Note: This really is just a snippet of a 25-minute interview. Send your comments if you’d like to hear more. Be glad to edit up another, extended version for you Clash fans. Also, just for the record, for a man who’s pretty much a legend unto himself, Temple’s incredibly accessible and engaging and didn’t seem to snicker too loudly when I confessed to being a Clash fan. (Talk about your Chris Farley moments.)

Daily See & Do: Against Me!

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

againstme.jpg

As an activist-minded band that records for a major label, Gainesville, Fla.’s AGAINST ME! has balanced artistic growth and popularity with the inevitable accusations of “selling out.” Released last summer on Sire Records, its third album, New Wave, is both rabble-rousing and body-moving. The group matches its hardcore rock with meaty, head-banging beats, eliciting respect from mainstream critics and punk aficionados alike. A few disparate artists tag along to the Tues., NOV. 6, show, including literate rapper/poet Sage Francis, eclectic punk troupe World/Inferno Friendship Society and Cobra Skulls. $15-$17. 7:30 p.m. Center Stage Atlanta, 1374 W. Peachtree St. 404-885-1365. www.centerstage-atlanta.com.
