Bikini beach party/GG King 7-inch release tonight at 529

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

GG King celebrates the release of his new “Drug Zoo” b/w “Witching Hour,” “the “Letter” 7-inch on Rob’s House Records tonight at 529. In all reality the records probably won’t have arrived yet, but there’s always hope.

According to Rob’s House GG King’s new single is,

another new offshoot from members of carbonas and if you heard their first single on douchemaster you might even think it was the carbonas but this one strays pretty far from that tested sound. ‘drug zoo’ finds gg king mixing a bit of his name sake’s influence with early aussie punk, a few hints of black metal and, to really mix things up, a box tops cover!! a few people might have heard these songs on gg’s last of the night wiggers demos but here they are remixed, mastered and on vinyl! [800 pressed; black vinyl; 100 copies with numbered gg king poster.]

Wizzard Sleeve from Mobile, Alabama also performs. It should also be duly noted that the Pillow Talk DJs have declared this night to be the landlocked bikini beach party event of the summer, and they promise to be spinning records in bikinis. …

$5. 9 p.m. 529 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-228-6769.

A rainy day at the beach pt. 2

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Day 1 in the Redneck Riviera (A.K.A. Destin, Florida) was a success despite the less than summery weather. At the beginning of the trip B Jay had suggested that I call these blog posts “Endless Summer,” but it was apparent upon arrival that summer had not yet begun. But why let that ruin the trip?

After checking into our hotel and scoping out the view from our room over Destin Harbor, we spied a derelict, half-sunken boat that appeared to have been abandoned. The water in the harbor was calm and an occasional dolphin fin or jumping fish flashed across the surface from time to time.

Our room was on the fourth floor of a five story building and our balcony was under constant bombardment from a flock of seagulls who were hungry and demanding. Their barking visits turned out to be among the most high-energy moments of the trip. We fed them peanuts, tortilla chips, onion rings from Burger King and bread and bagels from the hotel’s free continental breakfast stand. Everyone including the hotel concierge gave me dirty looks when they saw me cramming bagels into my pockets and heading back to the room. After the first few rounds we even started recognizing the repeat visitors by their distinctive markings and squawks.

… There is something both surreal and incredibly hilarious about looking into a seagull’s eye as it snatches an entire onion ring out of the sky and flies away with it dangling in its beak.

A rainy day at the beach pt. 1

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Six months ago Bobby Ubangi (B. Jay Womack) of local punk/garage rock/shit-fi bands the Gaye Blades and the Soft Spots was diagnosed with stage IV small cell lung cancer that had spread to his brain. The prognosis was terminal. Chemo and radiation treatments would slow down the cancer, but he was given a life expectancy of about six more months. The time came and went without incident, and when everything seemed to be working, Womack learned that the cancer had spread to his liver, and when that goes, he goes.

At the time he was initially diagnosed, I asked B. Jay if there was anything that he wanted to do; something that he had always wanted to but never had the time, and without hesitation he said, “I want to go to the beach.”

Plans were made and put off a couple of times, but when the latest round of bad news came down the pike it seemed that a trip to the beach was in order sooner than later.

Roll Call: NOBUNNY

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

For today’s installment of Roll Call we call out NOBUNNY. The rabbit-masked and Ramones-esque crooner plays the Atlanta Mess-Around this Sat, Nov. 15th.

Who are you?
I’m nothing special. A dirt dog. Mr. Hyde. Primal screams and refried beans. A boxcar and a jug of wine. A 40 and a skateboard. The American dream. He who talks loud, saying nothing. I am nobody. I am NOBUNNY.

Describe yourself in three words.
Cuddly and Sadistic

Who — dead or alive — would most you like to meet?
I already met Hasil Adkins, so I’ll say Alive: Michael Jackson. Dead: Joey Ramone.

Who would you most like to slap in the face?
My little sister Megan. She’s a baaaad girl. Yes she is.

What song do you wish you had written?
“I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5ive. Not only do I wish I wrote it, I wish I sang it, recorded it, performed everything on it. Every time I hear it I imagine that it’s the opening track off my new record and just how damn satisfying that would be.

Elvis Costello or Elvis Presley?
PRESLEY!!! Anyone who answers Costello just doesn’t get it man. Wake up and LIVE people! You have the right to breath fresh air and fuck beautiful women! C’mon!

LP, CD or MP3?
dogshit

If you could start one trend, what would it be?
Compassion. Be kind to fast food workers. For a duck may be somebody’s mother.

If you could end one trend, what would it be?
While it’s petty, I can’t handle those bluetooth ear phone things. Whenever I see someone wearing one, I always want to take a hammer and whack ‘em real good in the ear.

With whom would you most like to play a game of spin the bottle?
17 year old Rosanna Arquette.

Mess me up MP3

I am a girlfriend MP3

NOBUNNY w/ the Wax Museums play The Earl as part of the Atlanta Mess-Around fest. on Sat., Nov. 15th. Two day passes are available for $20. Tickets are $12 at the door.

Black Lips, Carbonas, Gentleman Jesse, Predator at Rob’s House

Monday, July 28th, 2008

rhs.jpg

The show at Rob’s House this Saturday, July 26th was a well-kept secret… sort of. There wasn’t as much as a peep on the internet or in the local media about the Black Lips playing a free house show in East Atlanta, but word-of-mouth brought about 100 – 150 people out, which actually made it about the perfect sized crowd.

The flier that you see to your left didn’t even show up until the day of the show.

Regardless, the basement at 1318 Ormewood Ave. felt like a scene from Dante’s Infero as Predator, Gentleman Jesse and Carbonas exploded in a haze of smoke and unbearable heat. Sweat-soaked bodies packed the tiny dungeon as Gentleman Jesse played its final show before bassist Dustin Nigro moves off to NYC. This show also served as a successful test run for the group with new guitarist Adrian Barrera (also of the Hiss).

For many long-time but estranged fans, seeing the Black Lips in a basement was a refreshing reminder of the days when most local venues wouldn’t even give the group the time of day for fear of property damage. Back then the Black Lips had nowhere else to play but house shows. Seeing them tear it up in such a cramped and sweaty environment was a return to the good old days. It was also the last show at Rob’s House before the label’s founder Trey Lindsay moves off to New York as well.

Could there have been a better way to bring an end to the era? The show was a visceral return to form that literally brought it all back home.

The Coathangers need your boobies

Friday, October 12th, 2007

Tomorrow — Saturday, Oct. 13 — the Coathangers are filming a music video at the infamous Rob’s House, and the band is inviting its fans to participate. Here’s the bulletin sent ’round on MySpace:

on Saturday October 13, we’re shooting a video for The Coathangers at Rob’s House (1318 Ormewood Avenue). we would like to invite all who would like to see a free show and be in a music video. we need folks as extras at the show so if you’re interested in acting, please contact me (www.myspace.com/robshouserecords). time for the show is 4 – 7.

this is not a real real show – its a music video shoot but its supposed to be like a house show. the director has asked for people to dress like you’re going to a show; the more over the top, the better. anyway, we’ll have a keg too so it’ll be fun – we’d love if a few folks could stick around past the 7pm time to be featured extras.

love,
Rob’s House Records
