Sophe Nix can ‘Get It’

Backpage Review

My latest whipster crush comes in the form of a pixie shtick named Sophe Nix.

Wil May introduced her to me at Caleb Gauge’s Sloppy Seconds (MJQ) party last Saturday night. She couldn’t have stood an inch over 4-foot-11. I had to stand on my tip-toes just to glimpse her onstage through the crowd.

Her hair was all done up like Material Girl meets Apollonia in “Purple Rain,” but it seemed less ironic than innocent. She came on to me like a cheap one-liner, whispering sweet nothings in my ear — some song called “Get It.”

She and her two dancers moved like synchronized swimmers bathing in a hot tub of electro static and a billion beats per minute. Sorta reminded me of another ’round-the-way chick, Muffy “the Body” Cupcakeopia, minus the confusion and sexual angst. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not. At the end of the night when I stalked past her near the bar, she pretended to accidentally brush up against me.

I’ll have her dancing on my laptop in no time.

Coming soon: Roxy Cottontail

As everyone knows, CL published several stories on Sloppy Seconds in 2007, including my controversial column in the Dec. 26 issue. Those stories often ran with the above photograph.

Take a close look. Standing up in the top center of the photo is Caleb Gauge, the impresario behind Sloppy Seconds. Kelly B., his former business partner, is sitting to Caleb’s left. To his right is Ian Ford, another former business partner who now throws cool events such as the Art of Partying. However, the blond girl sitting in the center below Caleb has nothing to do with Sloppy Seconds.

Her name is Roxy Cottontail. She’s not from Atlanta, but New York. She’s the subject of countless articles in your favorite tastemaker glossies, and currently graces the cover of URB magazine. The last time Roxy appeared here was at a Sloppy Seconds party in late 2006, and she absolutely killed it on the decks. She also promotes a lot of cool parties, has her own fashion line and even writes her own songs. Although I think her songs are kinda wack (sorry, gotta be honest), they add to her mystique as an arbiter of style.

Anyway, Roxy will return to Atlanta for the February edition of Sloppy Seconds on Saturday, Feb. 16. She’ll be joined by local kids DJ Klever, Rob Wonder and Hollyweerd.

Off Beat #1: A podcast of sorts with Supreeme

SUPREEME SUPREEME: Performs with DJ Klever, Mano and Jordan Jeffares of Snowden at Sloppy Seconds, Sat., Jan. 12. 10 p.m. MJQ. 736 Ponce de Leon Ave.

Click here to listen to Off Beat #1: a podcast with Negashi and King Self of Supreeme.

Negashi and King Self of Supreeme — our ‘07 Best of Atlanta hip-hop winners — stopped by the CL office right before Christmas with a coupla stocking stuffers: a copy of the new mixtape, American Badass; and a six-pack of Guinness.

So, I did the professional thing and popped a coupla cans with them while we proceeded to shoot the shit.

We recorded it for posterity’s sake. Don’t call it a podcast, though; it’s more like a blabcast. We sorta rambled with no destination in mind, so the conversation doesn’t really get focused until about halfway through when Negashi starts talking about the group’s meager beginnings in Atlanta.

“I was the freaking middle-school freestyle champion at Inman middle,” he says, adding that he and MC/producer Tom Cruz (aka Dope Pope) were already in the works to form a group when mutual friend Sam (aka King Self) approached.

“What’s up, you gotta be black? I got freckles,” Negashi recalls Sam asking.

The rest is history. They also play songs from a few of their influences and favorites, such as Neil Young and Deerhunter. Currently, the trio awaits a scheduled summer ‘08 release for the already completed album, Gold Medallion. They spent a lot of time recording in N.Y. and L.A., but you can catch them performing live this Sat., Jan. 12 at Sloppy Seconds. 10 p.m. MJQ Concourse. 736 Ponce de Leon Ave.

Tittsworth & Klever rock MJQ

DJ KLEVER (LEFT) AND TITTSWORTH: Don’t stop believin’.

After turning the Royal from a second-string contestant for celebrity photo-ops into a favored hangout for Atlanta’s ’80s babies, Sloppy Seconds has moved to MJQ, and will now happen there the second Saturday of every month. Last Saturday, Dec. 8, event svengali Caleb Gauge brought his star client, DJ Klever (whom he manages), and Washington, D.C.’s Tittsworth for the first installment. The two turntablists party rocked on four Serato-powered turntables, and flew from Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” to Three 6 Mafia’s “Stay Fly.”

Freelance party photographer the Midnight Socialite, whom Rodney Carmichael spoke to for CL’s Oct. 4 issue, took a few photos of the party. Check out the flicks below, and then visit the Midnight Socialite’s website for an extended look at his work.
