MOVIN' THE CROWD: Rakim

SEE MORE PHOTOS FROM RAKIM’S SHOW

You know the feeling you get when the DJ makes the last call for alcohol?

You know you probably don’t need another Blue Moon, but what the hell? You’re there; you may as well. Same goes for the A3C Festival. With more than enough acts to chose from, attendees staggered from one venue to the next looking for one last shot to keep them properly buzzed until next year.

Though the entire final day was full of joyful hip-hop activity, the most potent shots of the night belonged to Rakim, Mike Bigga (Killer Mike), J. Cole and … Grip Plyaz? (We’ll get to that later).

DUCK DOWN: Buckshot brings the heat at East Atlanta Icehouse

There’s something to be said about hip-hoppers that don’t have to worry about going to work in the morning. Maybe it’s that Johnny Kemp “Just Got Paid” syndrome. Maybe it’s the cheap PBR. Whatever. Last night, heads were clearly more than ready to shake that load off at day two of the A3C Festival — and the energy was electric.

A note from Psyche O about playing the 5 Spot Sunday night

Friday, March 20th, 2009

A note from Psyche Origami’s Facebook page regarding their show at the 5 Spot this Sunday, March 22.

“What’s good people! Wyz here! Just wanted to let you all know about what’s cooking on the PO burner!

As a lot of you already know, a new Psyche O album is in it’s final stages of development. The Psyche Orchestra project (a side endeavor that covers past, present, and future PO material) is almost ready for your consumption but, in the meantime, check out what we’ve got in store for you just days away. Once again, for those of you outside of the Southeast region, PO loves you and we’ll see you sooner than later.

Sunday night, don’t miss your chance to see Psyche O rock a new album preview set for you and yours. We’re getting tuned up for a string of shows this spring and summer with an especially big one to be named later.

This event is a cd release party for our good friends Mr. Lucky who’s new album ‘Try This Out Before You Thank Me’ is quickly becoming a favorite of mine! Opening the night will be a reunion show for our long time crew members Minamina Goodsong. It’s been a while since they performed, but I hear that their set is not to be missed as they will be playing all their classic shit and all the while bringing us back to that feeling that we had in 2002. Nothing like a blast from the past. By the way, this is the first time PO and Minamina have rocked together in a long time! Don’t miss it!”

Admission for the show at the 5 Spot on Sun., March 22 is $7. Music starts at 8 p.m.

Adron

BABE IN THE WOODS: Adron (photo by Chad Radford)

When she still lived in Atlanta Adron (Adrienne McCann) was one of Atlanta’s best kept secrets. Since moving to Brooklyn about six months ago the city has felt like a much emptier place without her. Tonight Adron returns to her old stomping grounds to play a show at The 5 Spot in L5P.

In July the wayward songstress will release her self-titled debut on Atlanta’s New Street Recordings, home to fellow local folkies JuJu B Solomon and Isia Cooper.

Adron skews the traditions of a little lady with a big guitar by embracing a strong element of Tropicalia and a quasi-Brazilian-style strum that is at once baroque, hypnotic and totally enthralling.

Imagine, if you will, the sounds of Beck pre-Sea Change, Os Mutantes, the Beatles and Seu Jorge’s soundtrack to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and you’re somewhere in the right neighborhood, but not quite there. Adron’s songs are as captivating as they are distinctive and this rare homecoming performance is not to be missed.

Chad Radford: How long have you been playing guitar?

Adron: I started when I was 12, I guess. I’ve been playing piano since I was four. I demonstrated an early aptitude for it, but playing piano was always like homework for me. I’m grateful for it and I have an avid appreciation for the great classical masters, but it’s not very useful for me aside from having all of this esoteric invisible knowledge but don’t know that I have. I wanted to play guitar. I knew I wanted to be a kick-ass songwriter … I wanted to be a rock star and I was always thinking of the best avenue to get there so I thought that I should learn to play a guitar. I didn’t want to start writing songs on a piano because it just didn’t feel natural. My brother was a guitar player, so I stole that from him.
