Coathangers to embark on fall tour with Japandroids

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The Coathangers are heading back out on tour this fall in support of their second album, Scramble. This time around the Atlanta lady punks are playing a handful of shows with Vancouver duo Japandroids who are touring behind their debut full-length, Post-Nothing.

The tour kicks-off in Atlanta at 529 on Fri., Sept. 25 and will be followed by a several dates leading up to Quebec’s Pop Montreal Festival. After that they hook-up with Japandroids to make a trek across Canada and  down to the East Coast and Midwestern states before heading South again.

Normally we wouldn’t condone watching reality TV shows of any stripe, but we’ll make an exception to keep an eye out from Coathangers’ drummer Stephanie Luke’s appearance on an upcoming episode of TLC’s “LA INK.” The air date is still TBA but we’ll let you know when we hear anything.

Coathangers, Can Can & Judi Chicago play the Earl tonight

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The Coathangers have come a long way since releasing a self-titled debut in September 2007. Scramble, the sophomore album from Atlanta’s premier lady punk quartet (their first was released on Rob’s House) is full of the noisy, yappy, sometimes endearing, and sometimes squelching chatter that has made them such a divisive act. But there’s an air of confidence driving the sharper writing and visceral deliveries on such songs as “Toomerhead” and “Arthritus Sux.”

The slower tempo heard on the album’s stand-out cut, “Stop, Stomp, Stompin,’” and the piano and noise-laced chant of “Sonic You” channel the tension of the group’s chaotic beginnings into a more refined sound. Continue reading.

See how much their time in the trenches has honed their terse, punk rock anthems tonight when they headline a show at the Earl with Can Can and Judi Chicago.

$8. 8 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Rd. 404-522-3950.

Touch & Go’s drastic downsize sends tremors through indie rock world

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Sad news hit the indie rock world today when one of it’s longest running major players Touch and Go Records announced that the company was drastically reducing in size, axing its distribution arm and laying off several employees. These harsh cuts are the result of the current state of the economy making it too difficult for the label to continue operating as is.

That said, the label still exists, but to what extent, and how it will affect recent signees such as Mi Ami and Atlanta’s All the Saints remains to be seen. After owner Corey Rusk released his official statement today, he later told Pitchforkmedia.com that the label may begin releasing new music at some point in the future, but as of right now nothing is certain. In the meantime it also remains to be seen how T&G distributed labels such as Merge, Drag City and Suicide Squeeze — who recently signed the Coathangers — will be affected as well.

Here is the complete text of Corey Rusk’s statement:

“It is with great sadness that we are reporting some major changes here at Touch and Go Records. Many of you may not be aware, but for nearly 2 decades, Touch and Go has provided manufacturing and distribution services for a select yet diverse group of other important independent record labels. Titles from these other labels populate the shelves of our warehouse alongside the titles on our own two labels, Touch and Go Records, and Quarterstick Records.

“Unfortunately, as much as we love all of these labels, the current state of the economy has reached the point where we can no longer afford to continue this lesser known, yet important part of Touch and Go’s operations. Over the years, these labels have become part of our family, and it pains us to see them go. We wish them all the very best and we will be doing everything we can to help make the transition as easy as possible.

“Touch and Go will be returning to its roots and focusing solely on being an independent record label. We’ll be busy for a few months working closely with the departing labels and scaling our company to an appropriate smaller size after their departure. It is the end of a grand chapter in Touch and Go’s history, but we also know that good things can come from new beginnings.”

Roll Call: Ben Coleman of Judi Chicago

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

For the first installment of Crib Notes’ new Roll Call we call out Ben Coleman of the Atlanta electro duo Judi Chicago.

Who are you?
Ben. I’m in a band called Judi Chicago. Pleased to meet you.

Describe yourself in three words.
Mouthy Dancehall Immigrant.

Who — dead or alive — would most you like to meet?
Robert Wyatt, Antonin Artaud, Terry Riley, Sylvester, James Brown, Syd Barrett, Lemmy, The Marx Brothers and Judy Chicago. Preferably all at once, over a good dinner.

Who would you most like to slap in the face?
Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin, or any other cretinous faux-patriot bigot-gollum within reach.

What song do you wish you had written?
“Eat Yrself Fitter” by the Fall. “Wind It Up” by the Prodigy. “St. Elmo’s Fire” (the Brian Eno song or the John Parr song, you pick). Anything by Underworld. “Loose Booty” by Sly Stone. “Big Time” by Peter Gabriel.

Elvis Costello or Elvis Presley?
Presley. Costello is a little bland for these buds. I’ll take Reg Presley over both if I have the choice.

LP, CD or MP3?
LP, if I have a choice, but I’m not making a big deal about it. It’s the music that counts, not the medium. However, vinyl remains the best sounding format, and I like big cover art.

If you could start one trend, what would it be?
Dancing in an unironic way to something more interesting than a mash-up or Soulja Boy.

If you could end one trend, what would it be?
Posing / sulking and just generally being an anally retentive know it all misery guts.

With whom would you most like to play a game of spin the bottle?
Girls Aloud, the best British girl group ever. Closer to home, the Coathangers, although I’m pretty sure they’ll beat me up for saying it.

Listen to Judy Chicago’s “Mad Ape.”

See Judi Chicago:
Nov. 8. — 8 p.m. ‘Underground’ at Eyebeam Studio NYC w. Roxy Cottontail. NYC.
Nov. 28 — 8 p.m. Beep Beep Gallery ATL.
Dec. 5 — 8 p.m. Lenny’s Bar – Acid House Party, Judi Chicago Live + D.J ATL.

Atlanta punks stage SXSW coup at Beerland

Monday, March 17th, 2008

sxsw11.jpg

(all photos by Ben Westhoff, see more below jump.)

Though South By Southwest wisdom says that if you can get into a show, it’s not worth going to, Saturday’s Rob’s House Records/Die Slaughterhaus/Douchemaster Records showcase featured both elbow room and raucous local punk.

Perhaps that’s because it wasn’t an official event show; a sign near the front door read, “No wristband? No problem! This is Beerland, not SXSW.”

The Red River St. bar featured exactly what you’d expect from its name — cheap PBR and nudie pics in the men’s bathroom. Though it also featured acclaimed garage punkster Jay Reatard and Wax Museum, the concert focused on Atlanta acts, led off by Beat Beat Beat and followed by buzzworthy girl groups the Coathangers and Baby Shakes.
