Valerie Culkin’s ultimate mixtape

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Valerie Culkin – Booking – Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge
My Mixtape

1.  The Kinks – “Yes Sir, No Sir”
2.  Buena Vista Social Club – “Chan Chan”
3.  Don Chambers – “Back in the Woods”
4.  Fleet Foxes – “Tiger Mountain Song”
5.  Weezer – “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”
6.  Bruce Springsteen – “Hungry Heart”
7.  Animal Collective – “My Girls”
8.  Built to Spill – “Liar”
9.  Death Cab for Cutie – “Someday You Will Be Loved”
10.  Bob Dylan – “The Times They Are A Changin’”

My favorite local act is Howlies.  This trio originally from Florida just played the Ballroom for Fringe Factory last month.  I’d never heard them before and was completely blown away.  These guys have so much energy and you could tell they were having the time of their life. It’s so refreshing to see a straight up rock band who seems so genuine about the music they are playing and I felt kinda like I was watching them back in the early ’60’s, when rock n’ roll was a pure and a fun thing to do. I wouldn’t be surprised if these guys took their project very far.

Favorite Atlanta band:
The Luchagors. They don’t get a fraction of the attention they deserve in this city. They write fantastic punky rock songs, they’re a balls-out fun-house live, their singer is the best frontperson in Atlanta, they don’t weigh things down with unnecessary arty-farty pretensions, they aren’t concerned with being part of the cool crowd, and the skinny jeans hip kids ignore them, so you don’t have to deal with that annoyance at their shows. They work hard, play hard, they tour the States and Europe, and they’re also incredibly creative people outside of the band itself. So there.

Bobby Moore’s ultimate mixtape

Friday, May 1st, 2009

I’m Bobby Moore, the man behind the 7 Inch Atlanta blog. The blog is almost a year old, and it covers the live and studio output of many of Atlanta’s best punk and garage bands.

My mixtape

1. “Complete Control” by the Clash
2. “Oh Oh I Love Her So” by the Ramones
3. “Better Off Dead” by Le Peste
4. “Baby, Baby” by the Vibrators
5. “Bad Kids” by The Black Lips
6. “19th Nervous Breakdown” by the Rolling Stones
7. “My Love” by New Age Steppers
8. “Cruel To Be Kind” by Nick Lowe
9. “Dead Rainbow” by Dolly Mixture
10. “Sick On You” by Hollywood Brats

Favorite Atlanta-based band:

The Coathangers are easily my favorite Atlanta band of the moment. The girls have grown musically and as songwriters over the past couple of years without losing their senses of fun. Their live shows rarely disappoint, as they treat each outing as a holiday or birthday party. From early, sophomoric offerings like “Don’t Touch My Shit” to newer, well-crafted tunes like “Bury Me,” all of their songs make me happy whenever I hear them. No one else other than the Ramones cheers me up instantly the minute the needle drops. And the sad or angry songs do not quell this instant joy. Joey singing about poison hearts cheers me up, and so does Julia when she screams about breaking someone’s face.

Brian Poust’s ultimate mixtape

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Brian Poust, DJ/Record Addict, Georgiasoul.com

8. Billy Young – “Suffering With A Hangover”
9. King David & the Slaves – “I’ve Been Told”
10. Tony Troutman – “So Much She’s Gone Away”

Favorite Atlanta-based artist:
Tommy Brown has been involved in the Atlanta music scene since the 1940s as a drummer, singer, comedian and dancer. He still gets out on the road on a regular basis but also holds court at Blind Willies every few weeks. Tommy has obviously got some deal with the Devil going, as evidenced by his stage performance, wit and charm. Yet, I’m consistently surprised by how many people aren’t aware of him. Tommy is an integral part of Atlanta music history, and still relevant today to anyone who likes music.

Armando Celentano’s ultimate mixtape

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Armando Celentano – supreme keeper of ye olde Drunken Unicorn and Black Lips tour manager.

My mixtape

1. “Waiting Room”- Fugazi
2. “Star Wars Theme” – John Williams
3. Crack the Skye (the whole damn album) – Mastodon

We just went on tour with them for a month and their songs were totally getting stuck in my head to the point where I was craving seeing their set every night just so I could have some peace of mind. Power pop is the future and Gentleman Jesse and His Men are the Jonahs Brothers of the ATL scene.

Holly Lang’s ultimate mixtape

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Holly Lang – Founding editor of Pine Magazine

My mixtape:

Brigette Bardot “Ça Pourrait Changer” Best of Bardot
Blackalicious “Chemical Calisthenics” Blazing Arrow
Les Savy Fav “Wake Up” The Cat and the Cobra
Galt MacDermot “Coffee Cold” Shapes of Rhythm
Serge Gainsbourg “Ballade de Melody Nelson” L’Histoire De Melody Nelson
Margo Guryan “Someone I Know” Take a Picture
Neutral Milk Hotel “Aeroplane Over the Sea” In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Toshack Highway “The Sounds and the Times”
Magnetic Morning (split with Sianspheric/Aspirin Age)
Deerhunter “Rainwater Cassette Exchange” Rainwater Cassette Exchange
Dr. Dog “Little Bird” Passed Away, Vol. 1

My favorite Atlanta band? I’d have to say Club Awesome. Easily one of the more fun bands around, they tend to go ridiculously balls out at their shows, complete with weird outfits and strange showmanship. But while many bands who use props and costumes during shows tend to lack in skill and talent, Club Awesome is actually pretty good. Their new album Dynamos is as energetic as the band, and features that atypical style of pop that separates them from most the other bands ‘round these here parts. Plus they sometimes have pool parties at their shows. Who doesn’t like to get half-naked and wet while watching a band play?

Lance Ledbetter’s ultimate mixtape

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

To celebrate CL’s annual music issue we asked a random mix of Atlanta tastemakers, critics and promoters to share their greatest playlists.

Lance Ledbetter, founder of Dust-to-Digital

1. Rev. Johnny L. Jones “God Specializes”
2. Omar Souleyman “Leh Jani”
3. Chubby Parker “Bib-a-Lollie-Boo”
4. Andy Iona and His Islanders “Ta-hu-wa-hu-wa-i”
5. Cecil Barfield “Georgia Blues”
6. Brother Claude Ely “There Ain’t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down”
7. Chrissy Zebby Tembo and Ngozi Family “Trouble Maker”
8. Marika Papagika “Smyrneiko Minore”
9. Group Bombino “Imuhar”
10. John Fahey “Desperate Man Blues”

My favorite Atlanta-based artists is Rev. Johnny L. Jones of Second Mount Olive Baptist Church. His nickname is the Hurricane, and after you hear some of his songs and sermons you’ll know why. The music is supplied by organ and tambourine with the congregation backing Johnny, and the result is some of the most ecstatic sounds I’ve ever heard. Check him out on WYZE 1480AM every other Saturday at 11a.m.

Bean Summer’s ultimate mixtape

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

To celebrate CL’s annual music issue we asked a random mix of Atlanta tastemakers, critics and promoters to share their greatest playlists.

Bean Summer
Video artist/Lenny’s promoter

Top 10 Playlist
1. Roger Miller “Chug-a-lug” Golden Hits
2. Talking Heads “Once in a Lifetime” Best of the Talking Heads
3. Summer Hymns “Trouble” Clemency
4. God Speed You Black Emperor “The Dead Flag Blues” F# A# (Infinity)
5. Alejandro Jodorowsky “Psychedelic Weapons” From the Holy Mountain soundtrack.
6. Beck “Hollywood Freaks” Midnight Vultures
7. John Oswald “Power” 69 Plunderphonics 96
8. Johnny Cash “Busted” Blood, Sweat and Tears
9. Throbbing Gristle-everything they ever did!
10. Thurston Howl III “Still Lives with my Moms,” Featuring: Master Fuol-Skillionaire.

Favorite Atlanta-based music act
Anytime the Lazy Indians played at Lenny’s Bar they were the worst band in the history of the city. They were politically incorrect, horribly distasteful, rude, hard to deal with, drunk, and Carter (the lead singer) tried to fight the entire crowd at  Lenny’s each time they played. I hated their name, everything was wrong about this band. They sounded like the worst flipper cover band in history and they possibly broke everything they owned on stage. They could hardly finish a song. They made the Black Lips looks like a boys choir. They were possibly the worst stage band in history besides the G.G. Allin. I have to say they were hands down the my favorite Atlanta-based band because they honestly did not care about anything at all except music as pure experience.
