King Khan and Kristin Klein are free and on the road again

Kristen-Klein-King-Khan

Much hullabaloo has been made after Arish “King” Khan and the King Khan & BBQ Show’s road manager Kristin Klein were arrested in Christian County, Kentucky last week.  The two were picked up on alleged charges of possession of a controlled substance (mushrooms) and driving on a suspended license.

The full details of the arrest can be read on the Kentucky New Era’s website.

Klein appeared in court yesterday (Mon., Nov. 16), after which the band issued a statement breaking down the situation as it stands now.

“On November 16, 2009 Kristin Klein entered a guilty plea to 2nd degree possession of a controlled substance in Christian County, Kentucky. Ms Klein was driving a rental vehicle that was randomly stopped at a safety checkpoint. Officers located a controlled substance in the cab of the vehicle. Ms Klein was unaware of the contraband and the validity of her license was indeterminable at time of arrest. Under KY law a driver of a vehicle is responsible for its contents. Therefore, Ms Klein entered a guilty plea and is scheduled to appear on April 2, 2010 to provide proof of her valid license.

“King Khan & BBQ Show are driving through the night to make their Los Angeles show at Troubadour tomorrow. Tonight’s show in Phoenix is cancelled, but all further west coast dates and will to be honored. Kristin Klein is safe with the band and continuing her tenure as tour manager.”

Klein explained over the telephone today that despite their best efforts they won’t be able to play the show in Los Angeles scheduled for tonight and are now en route to San Francisco to make it in time to play at the Independent on Wed., Nov. 18.

Klein spoke off the record about the incident, but explained that despite their Canadian citizenship, an international incident was avoided. In other words, no one is being deported and the King Khan and BBQ show can and will go on.

Wavves vs. Black Lips: Vengeance is mine, saith Swilley

JARED SWILLEY OF BLACK LIPS

In case you’ve missed the excitement, Buddyhead.com has a pretty entertaining run-down of the ridiculous brawl that came to a head this weekend between Wavves’ manager and Jared Swilley of the Black Lips.

The whole situation is just plain annoying, not to mention Swilley’s comments in the interview reinforce some pretty gnarly, negative stereotypes about southerners. In the interview with Buddyhead, Swilley admits to approaching Nathan Williams of Wavves (whom he has publicly dissed) at Daddy’s Bar in New York and saying, “You’re that faggot from Wavves and I don’t like you!” — sounds like fighting words to me.

Swilley also issued the following warning to Williams: “He’s coming to Atlanta October 3rd [4th] and we’re gonna get ugly on him. We’re gonna destroy their van, we’re gonna destroy their faces, we’re gonna get crazy on em’. Nasty style.”

If I were Williams, I would take heed. Truth be told, the Black Lips are like a gang. If you mess with one of them, you mess with all of them, and Atlanta is their turf. Then again, it sounds like the Wavves crew rolls the same way. Looks like Oct. 4 is going to be a legendary night when Wavves plays the Earl.

Black Lips exiled from India

Monday, January 26th, 2009

According to a post on the Black Lips’ blog the group had it’s current tour of India canceled and had to flee the country to avoid going to jail over a matter of indecent exposure on “Campus Rock Idol,” which is pretty much India’s version of “American Idol.”

“When we got to the hotel our tour guide informed us that the that the Campus Rock Idols sponsors were pressing charges and that the police would make their arrest. At that point our tour driver informed us we would have to drive six hours to get to the next town and cross state lines where we would be out of the Tamil authorities’ jurisdiction, because apparently the jail in Chennai is no joke. Word on the street said that it was teeming with tuberculosis, violence and live maggots so instead of risking going there we fled the scene. The drive ended up taking 10 hours because of a horrific accident on the road. We were also informed that all of the shows on our tour had been canceled effectively fucking all funds for the trip. This was a cultural clashing shit storm.”

The post on the group’s blog also explains that the group fled to Berlin where it is holed up with their Indian ally King Khan, working on a new EP.

If only “American Idol” could be this exciting… The Black Lips’ album 200 Million Thousand hits the streets via Vice Records on Feb. 24th. No word yet on the above mentioned EP.

Live review: Renegades reunite at The Earl

Friday, October 17th, 2008

On the evening of Thursday, October 16th, the Black Lips plus Die Slaughterhaus Records owner Mark Nauman took the stage at the Earl to resurrect the now legendary Renegades — the short-lived, pre-Black Lips incarnation … the one that earned them the rowdy reputation that kept them off of most stages in town for a long long while.

The group appeared onstage after sets from opening bands Jack of Hearts, Goodnight Loving and Stolen Minks.

After giving a shout to their original drummer Bradley Harris, who died from an accidental overdose a few years back, Jared announced “the last time I played these songs I could not grow facial hair.”

This was the first time the Renegades’ name had even been uttered in town for nearly a decade.

If not for the one and only sleeveless and posthumous 7-inch the group released via Die Slaughterhaus a few years ago there would be nothing more than rumors and exaggerated memories to prove that the band ever even existed.

At the show Nauman threw handfuls of generic-looking old Renegades cassette tape recordings into the audience, but they were snatched up just as quickly as they flew through the air. A few tapes even clashed against in-coming beer cans and geysers of beer spray erupting from the tumultuous crowd.
