Annual 48 Hour Film Project kicks off tonight

The Annual 48 Hour Film Project launches tonight at The Independent in Midtown.

Every year, teams from cities around the world gather to write, shoot, and edit a short, 7-minute film in a 2-day period. Each group is randomly assigned a different genre, ranging from romance, western, comedy, and even a musical category. Each group must also incorporate a specific character, prop, and line of dialogue in the feature. For example, a group could end up with a science fiction film featuring Scarlett O’Hara and a candy cane. Let’s hope a group doesn’t end up with that.

I will be blogging all weekend long, taking you inside one filmmaking group, as they tirelessly try to write, shoot, and edit their film. You will get to read about the long hours, close calls, and really see the work that goes into making a film on a small budget and timeline.

The grand prize for the best film in the Atlanta area will receive a trophy, scriptwriting software, and the winning film will be screened at a national film festival later this year. If you want to catch all the local shorts, they will be screened from Tuesday through Thursday at Midtown Art Cinema. Each of the events is put on in association with the Atlanta Film Festival.
