Niche and easy: EcoFocus Film Fest and Out on Film open tonight

The Cove shows Oct. 9-17, 19-21, and 24 in Athens at the EcoFocus Film Festival
Atlanta’s resident LGBT film fest, Out on Film, pulls double duty in 2009 with a second event Oct. 2-8. Last May’s festival hosted some interesting documentaries at the Plaza Theatre. For the fall incarnation, Out on Film presents a week’s worth of romance, drama and Big, Gay fun at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema.
The schedule includes films such as Annul Victory, which examines the emotional disconnect between President Barack Obama’s inauguration and the passage of Proposition 8; the no-explanation-needed The Big Gay Musical; and the documentary Cross Burning in Willacoochee, about hate crimes against a gay couple in the small South Georgia town. The festival’s held in honor of Allen Thornell, the Atlanta gay rights activist who died of a stroke Aug. 3. The short film”Disturb the Universe” celebrates Thornell’s life, and will screen tonight before the premiere of The Big Gay Musical.
Up in Athens, the EcoFocus Film Festival ushers in its second year with a month’s worth of environmentally minded cinema. Far from a preachy snorefest, the EFFF boasts award-winning movies such as The Cove, a wrenching exposé of dolphin fishing in Japan; as well as No Impact Man, about an NYC blogger/author turned Earth Father that did leave an impact at Sundance this year. EcoFocus opens tonight (and runs through Oct. 30) with cocktails and a screening of Earth Days, which traces the history of environmental movements over the past 50 or so years.
