A few questions with Sister Louisa

Religious folks like to say that God has a special plan for all of us. If that’s the case for Atlanta’s Sister Louisa, you can be sure that God has one hell of a sense of humor.

According to Sister Louisa’s biography, she was leading a quiet life in a convent near Baton Rouge, Louisiana until she met the janitor, “Luscious” Lamar Thibideau. Their love affair caused Louisa to leave the convent in disgrace. The new couple hit road together, eventually ending up in an Airstream trailer here in Atlanta. These days, Louisa makes religious art from objects that “Luscious” finds for her.

Before Louisa’s upcoming show at Aurora Coffee, we wanted to ask her a few questions about life after the convent. She’s a little hard to get in touch with, but her good friend Grant Henry passed along our questions to her.

What was the best part of living in a convent? Did the sisters ever get together over a good bottle of communion wine and have a good old fashioned girls night?

The best part about living in the convent was the fact that I didn’t actually have to live amongst the sinners. Oh, THAT, and the hats. My favorite book of ALL TIMES, was Dr. Seuss’s CAT IN THE HAT. Communion? Honey, The Priest’s and the Nuns know how to party! We love singing to hymns, but after several bottles of wine, singing RED RED WINE and WE ARE FAM-I-LY, ALL MY SISTERS AND ME....was a real party!
