Sean Penn’s a total Stooge
March 30, 2009 at 12:02 pm by Debbie MichaudAccording to Variety, MGM’s looking at Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro to play Larry, Curly and Moe, respectively, in the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges project set for a 2010 release.
Studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry, and negotiations are underway with Jim Carrey to play Curly, with the actor already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome “Curly” Howard.
The studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.
The film is not a biopic, but rather a comedy built around the antics of the three characters that Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard played in the Columbia Pictures shorts.
This is definitely a change of pace for Penn, whose scorching dramatic roles in 2004’s Mystic River and 2008’s Milk earned him Best Actor Oscars, and who, Variety notes, hasn’t starred in a comedy since 1989’s We’re No Angels.
I’ve never watched a single Three Stooges skit (I don’t think), but I’d see this just for Sean Penn — he can make pretty much any movie interesting in my book.
