Relapse Theatre avoids the boot

October 29, 2009 at 4:05 pm by Debbie Michaud

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that theater owner Bob Wood bought the building from Inman Park Properties founder Jeff Notrica for upwards of $2.8 million. According to the article, Notrica (yes, the same Notrica that owns the embattled, beer-crushing Clermont) was facing foreclosure and the pair’s deal had been in the works since April. A foreclosure would have forced the theater out of its 14th Street home.

The loan secured by the building was scheduled for foreclosure this month, according to a foreclosure auction notice. The value of the loan was $2.8 million, but Wood says “I paid more for the building than that.”…”It saved him from foreclosure,” Wood said. “He’s been a great guy to us. We wanted to help.”

Speakeasy with Doug Stanhope

August 2, 2009 at 11:30 am by Curt Holman

Award-winning stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope doesn’t just crack jokes about inflammatory topics like abortion or child pornography, he cracks funny jokes about such material. His uninhibited advocacy for drugs and booze (“Did you ever try to sleep sober? It’s impossible!”) can disguise his rigorous support of individual rights and willingness to attack any religion for “retardation of human intellectual progress.” You may recall Stanhope from telling a filthy joke to a baby in The Aristocrats, co-hosting Comedy Central’s “The Man Show,” or briefly running for U.S. president as the Libertarian Party candidate in 2008. He performs Aug. 8 at Relapse Theatre, and wants the word to get out that the show is BYOB: “Most of my audience are raging alcoholics, so I don’t want them to get the DTs.”

Sometimes you talk about soul-crushing corporate jobs. I was wondering, what was your most boring job?
I had so many. I had jobs that were as short as an hour and a half. One was putting circulars into newspapers, and I worked at it for 90 minutes before I said “I’m going to the bathroom” and never came back. I never spent a lot of time at a boring job. I’d either quit, or I’d try to make it fun and they would try to fire me. When I worked for a collections agency, I’d fuck with people until it became like a Jerky Boys routine. My bosses would tell me, “You’re still supposed to get the money from them.”

Big burlesque weekend!

April 17, 2009 at 3:28 pm by Scott Henry

The legendary Sally Rand

Fans of burlesque will be spoiled for choice in Atlanta this weekend, with several local groups in hip-swiveling, tassle-twirling action. In alphabetical order:

  • Big City Burlesque, which bills itself as “Atlanta’s only all-retro burlesque & vaudeville troupe,” will perform Saturday night at an event called JordanCon at a hotel in Alpharetta. To answer the obvious question: “JordanCon is the first convention dedicated to exploring Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series.” I assume the folks to whom this event would appeal will know who they are.
  • Dames Aflame will once again team up with Big Mike’s Tongo Hiti to provide entertainment at Trader Vic’s 75th Anniversary Party in the downtown Hilton. This event is Saturday night as well.
  • Effie’s Club Follies, which bills itself as “slapstrip comedic burlesque,” also performs Saturday at the 40 Watt Club in Athens for the 20th Annual Boybutante Ball, an AIDS benefit. Just a tip: if you go to this event hoping to see some nekkid girlies, well, you’ll be the only one.
  • Finally, Syrens of the South will host its 2nd Annual Spring Chicken Vaudeville and Variety Show — Saturday, natch — at Relapse Theatre on 14th Street.

Decisions, decisions! Now you have no excuse not to work some skin into your diet.
