Five Things to Do Today

1. Tonight and tomorrow night, Tampa Theatre presents Encounters at the End of the World, filmmaker Werner Herzog’s documentary about the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation and home to a mere 1,100 people during the austral summer (October-February). Using only a single cameraman and his own expert eye for detail, Herzog contrasts awe-inspiring visuals of Antarctica’s natural wonders with the day-to-day experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers, and truck drivers who’ve formed a society far, far away from the so-called real world. 7:30 p.m., Tampa Theatre, $9 adults/$8 students/$7 seniors and military.
2. Self-deprecating singer-songwriter Cory Branan plays New World Brewery, with opening sets by Urbane Cowboys, and Scott and Joey from Nessie. 8 p.m., NWB, $6.
3. Need a job? If so, the Tampa Bay Job Fair features more than 50 local companies with immediate employment needs, from entry level positions to managerial to skilled trade to health care. 9 a.m.-4 p.m., The Coliseum, St. Petersburg, free admission.
4. Who shot Nathan? Find out when the third season of Heroes kicks off tonight with a three-hour premiere event. 8-11 p.m., NBC.
5. The Met’s 2008-09 season is broadcast live, in high-definition, to more than 440 movie theaters and performing arts centers nationwide, including three in the Tampa Bay area. The “Opening Night Gala” stars soprano Renée Fleming in fully-staged performances of scenes from Verdi’s La Traviata, Massenet’s Manon and Richard Strauss’s Capriccio. 7 p.m., Regency 20, Brandon; Woodland Square 20, Oldsmar; and Citrus Stadium Park Mall 20, Tampa, $18-$22.
