Daily Loaf

Each Fall an army of eighteen-year-old “adults” floods USF, expecting to finally set foot in the long prophesized “real world.” They soon discover that college, and the real world, are whatever these freshmen make of them.  In constructing their identities, most are required to take a basic writing course. Creative Loafing has chosen four of those students to blog for the Daily Loaf.

This week, as the students know, was a test week. Just like during any other week there are so many opportunities to spend time having fun and doing anything else but study. For me, this test week carried some surprises.

I usually try to get to class no matter what. I am not really a reading person and I try to get most of my material through the lectures. The later turns out to be not so easy a task, because often the lectures are not long enough or the lecturer feels like we should really be reading instead of getting the material from him the easy way, through the lecture. At any rate, my rule is to show up to class with no exceptions. Well, this week this rule saved me twice…

I had a Calculus test on Tuesday. We had a major debate in class over when should we have that test. The choices were Tuesday or Thursday. Since the USF Bulls’ game was on Thursday, most people agreed that it would make more sense if we had our test on Tuesday.

My calculus class is always at night, and as you might know, at the end of the day you usually feel like you are tired of classes and it is time to leave and have some fun. That Tuesday night was especially tempting. I am so glad now that I made it my habit to go to class.

The discovery came as I sat down and my friend asked me in a cheerful voice whether I was ready.

“What? …now?” was all I could say. Once the shock passed, I was surely glad I made to class.

I do not know yet how well I did on the test, but anything is better that zero. I have some basis to hope that I did not do all that horribly because I had a chance to look over my notes earlier that day. I thought I was starting to study earlier for the test when I was reading my notes that morning. Now, that makes a whole another tip- do not wait until the last minute.

Another occurrence this week was American History class. I wanted to stay at my room and work on homework. I am now glad that I decided against that idea. On that day, the rare attendance roll was taken and being in class was also kind of important because we had to sign up on the topic of a major assignment in that class.

At any rate, showing up to class is probably not such a bad idea. Remember, it is always when you are not in class that something important is going on.
