Girls with a new flavor (the new hip hop sound)

There’s been this new sound swirling around; it sounds like hip hop but with an electro beat … I’m no music critic and my vocabulary to breakdown the proper terminology is laughable. All I know is this sound is propped up by new female “alternative” artists, and they all have a killer style.
In our first Fusionistas podcast (embedded below, check it) my guest is Shunda K, creator of the group Yo! Majesty. We have a candid conversation about where she’s been and where shes going, and how she was a forerunner of this new sound. Shunda has been collaborating with many artists on different tracks and we’ll link you some so you can hear for yourself. (check ‘em down below)

While you can hear the influence of hip hop in these lady artists, their styles seem to be emerging with something so fresh its undefinable. Take for example the artist ADDIQUIT; shes got a street swagger with chains around her neck, but some pictures she’s cute and tattooed and wearing a gathered tube top? I for one am a huge fan. I enjoy that dichotomy; it shows the versatility of a person. As for as the music, it reminds me of Cat Power dipped in hip hop. ( Shunda K also does a track with ADDIQUIT called “White Leather.”)

This new alternative feminine hip hop sound comes with a new style, too, and I venture to say a new identity. I may be making a gross overstatement, but I dare say it is a gay female identity, and we need a new face for the young, aware, talented gay female. There have been very few atypical gay role models in our society…and I see that changing with these girls.
