Performance contracting: how not to spend tax dollars and save the environment
April 27, 2009 at 1:08 pm by Mary MulhernThe City of Tampa can reduce energy and water usage in public buildings without spending any of your money. “Performance contracting” is how hundreds of governments across the country are financing green retrofitting of publicly owned properties.
Even in this economic climate, large companies offer low interest financing for analysis, engineering and installation of energy saving programs with a guarantee that the work (including interest payments) will pay for itself through cost savings. If the project comes in over budget – you are refunded. Cost neutral at worst, energy savings guaranteed.
My initial CL green post, this will be the first in a series of ways that government can go green in these revenue-short, credit-tight times. Later for how we should be investing tax dollars for future economic and environmental saving.
