Guilty Pleasures: McDonald’s Apple Pie

I tend to seek out food made from good quality ingredients that haven’t been manipulated too much. I love to cook, and take pride in making things from scratch. I try to eat local, and like to know where my food comes from. That means that fast food and junk food are not everyday choices. But being married to a junk food aficionado introduced me to another world of options.
Some of those options have become cravings. I call those my guilty pleasures. They include Krispy Kreme doughnuts (plain glazed, of course), Popeye’s spicy chicken tenders and onion rings, and the Whataburger potato breakfast taquito. My latest guilty pleasure is from McDonald’s.
I had avoided trying the McD apple pie because I remembered the deep-fried versions of my childhood. Those had a tough, oil-laden crust and an overly sweet artificial-tasting filling.
The new version of the pie has a tender baked pastry crust that gives way to a warm filling with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. That balance comes from a generous portion of apple in the cinnamon-laced filling.
In my area they are sold two for $1. The first I eat right away when the pie has a fresh-baked aroma, a warm filling and perfect crust. The second pie I save for later. It is easy enough warm it in a toaster oven, but I usually don’t go to the effort. Something about the cold pie makes me think of Thanksgiving Day when you raid the fridge long after the leftovers have been put away. Fast food that tastes good and evokes good memories deserves a place on my guilty pleasures list.
