Eco-friendlier computer monitors for a greener office

May 8, 2009 at 6:30 am by Alexa White

The EIZO Nano Corporation recently announced two new models of their FlexScan series of LCD monitors.

The new monitors are part of Eizo’s EcoView products, touting ergonomic, environmental, and economic improvements and features. Additionally, these are some of the world’s first products to receive TCO Displays 5.0 certification and the first Eizo products given EPEAT Gold status.

TCO certification applies to IT equipment meeting requirements in energy efficiency, a declaration of hazardous materials, and improved recyclability for both the monitor and its packaging.

EPEAT Gold is the highest rating given, acknowledging a product’s conformance to all 23 of the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool’s environmental criteria and at least 75% of the optional criteria.

The FlexScan EV2303W has a built-in motion sensor which will flip the monitor into power-saving mode when it detects an absense of motion longer than 40 seconds. It can tell the difference between a person at the desk and the back of an empty office chair, so you don’t have to worry about office furniture playing tricks on the power-saving equipment. Another sensor in the monitor measures ambient brightness and will darken or brighten the screen for optimal use. This helps prevent eye strain and can save up to 40% of the power used over monitors set at the default 100% brightness. When everyone leaves the office for the night and presses the power button, the monitor does not go into a standby mode like many do, instead it turns off and consumes no energy at all. For added control, Eizo offers EcoView Net software to control the power settings remotely over the network on up to 2000 of their monitors.

To reduce on packaging and improve shipping efficiency, these monitors are 48% thinner and 41% lighter than older models of the same screen size. This was made possible by improvements in technology and a reduction of sheet metal components by up to 90%.  Because of the reduced size, there is less packaging required, and the packaging they’ll use will be up to 100% recycled materials.

For all the details on both the EV2303W and EV2023W FlexScan models, check out this PDF of the product brochure.
