College expenses: What am I paying for exactly?
May 24, 2009 at 7:00 am by Meagan BemisI’m a college student, in case you hadn’t guessed from the headline, and I have recently been wondering what exactly it is I’m paying for with my college expenses. It seems that every corner I round, there’s another expense just lurking in the shadows (or standing right in front of me with a club), but I have yet to decide whether I am actually reaping the benefits of these expenses.
Let me explain:
This semester I took a class with a professor who shall remain nameless who has done literally nothing. He assigned us a book to buy (cha-ching) and basically said “read these chapter, then take this exam,” with a lot of anecdotal teaching in between that served no purpose whatsoever. So, I have paid for the class, I have paid for the book – but what have I gotten in return? A whole lot of stress and no education. Outrageous, I say!
Again this happened last semester with another professor who shall remain nameless who not only did all of the aforementioned things, but was also extremely pretentious and … well, mean. So, there again I learned nothing and was forced to sit, anxiously, class after class with nothing to show for it and miraculously pulling off a B…
I’m a good student, really I am. I’m one of those that speaks up when I know the answer or at least tries when the professor is sweating at the front of the classroom because no one is talking to him or her. I try hard in class and I always make the extra effort – but I just feel like I’m getting jipped – like these relationships between my professors and I are all give and no take (on my part).
Along with these disheartening experiences, I am in the midst of getting a communications/journalism degree – which if you’ve watched the news in the last, oh, year… you know that the journalism field is frankly at its wits end. So, I may actually graduate in May ‘10 with no where to go and then it will be even more obvious that I just paid up the wazoo for… nothing. FANTASTIC!
