Our man in Cannes loves Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds

May 28, 2009 at 2:21 pm by Clint Hanaway

I’m the guy on the left

Even now, I’m not quite sure how I managed to get into a screening of Quentin Tarantino’s new war epic. The theater was overbooked for the two available screenings and people were pushing the security guards in an attempt to get in.

Needless to say, I didn’t have a ticket. But I do have friends. Somewhere between the American Pavilion and the fact that I have become friends (over pints of Guinness of course) with Margit Pfeiffer, the film’s dialogue supervisor, I managed to get into a special screening.

The Weinstein Company decided they would throw a special ‘family and friends’ screening of the film the day after its appearance in the festival. I’d say that the film is, well… it’s FUCKING INCREDIBLE. That’s right, with a capital ‘fucking’.

“Once upon a time, in Nazi occupied France …” a platoon of Jewish-American soldiers led by a yee-haw version of Brad Pitt romp about killing Nazis and scalping their corpses. Well, not always scalping. There is a character knows as “the Bear-Jew,” a Jewish Hulk Hogan with the voice of Mort Goldman, who beats Nazis heads in with a Louisville Slugger. It’s all in good fun.

I mean, honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a good ‘Nazis Suck’ film. That, and Quentin Tarantino shreds historical accuracy throughout the entire film, for the better of course. I think the film would be better under the name Jewish Vengeance, but I suppose Inglourious Basterds will do.

The film is Tarantino at his best. All of his classic elements show up at one point or another, whether it’s an impromptu full-screen title or an out-of-place yet badass soundtrack.  If you enjoy anything from Four Rooms to Pulp Fiction or Foxy Brown you’ll love the Basterds.

With lots of long, intense passages of dialogue followed by bursts of passionate action, the film sparkles. I think this might be his masterpiece.
