Remembering Cannes: Martin Scorsese, Roger Ebert, Francis Ford Coppola and Nic Cage in a bear suit

May 29, 2009 at 9:00 am by Clint Hanaway

Editor’s Note: The Cannes Film Festival 2009 may be just a memory, but our man (mannes?) in Cannes, Clint Hanaway, wanted to send along an anecdote, with video, about his encounter with movie giants. Plus, he seems to have a thing for Nicolas Cage. He’s in Europe looking for WiFi at the moment, which is how he transmitted (finally) this post.

[From Chris: This post is a bit backdated, but finding WiFi in the Eastern bloc isn't the easiest.]

So here I am, in a Scorsese/ Ebert sandwich and all I can think of is how hungry I am. All they feed us at the American Pavilion is a few pieces of bread first thing in the morning. In other news, we are officially dedicating our conference center to Roger Ebert for his incredible contributions to the film community. The guy was the the first film critic ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Martin Scorsese is here to do the ribbon-cutting and to say a few words. Check out video from the event after the break.

This is going to be an interesting day. Scorsese and Ebert come inside where I’m waiting to guide Roger into his conference center. I work the front desk on normal occasions, but they needed big guys to work security today, so I’m lucky enough to be on the more privileged  side of a divider.

We all shake hands and then Scorsese excuses himself to attend something else. Busy guy, I suppose. I’m still here waiting for Francis Ford Coppola to arrive. The last time Coppola did a seminar I guess he was mobbed by fans, so he requested escort. That’s me.

When he finally arrives the guy almost sneaks by me; he’s over an hour late and dressed quite casually. I suppose one can afford to dress discreetly and take his time after creating The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and managing to have a successful vineyard on the side.

I tell him that I liked Apocalypse Now, but that Godfather III could have been better. He seemed amused. I’m just happy to be in the presence of a relative of the great Nicolas Cage. Oh Mr. Cage, I hope you read this and call me up so we can get a cafe and discuss Raising Arizona as well as your breakaway role in The Boy in Blue.

If you need a Cage fix right now (I know I do), here’s some clips of Nic punching women while dressed in a bear suit.

Other Nic Cage performances include (but are definitely not limited to) an inspired performance as Ghost Rider in Ghost Rider, a scene-stealing role as burger flipper #2 in Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and of course his Oscar-worthy run in the National Treasure saga.

On that note, Mr. Cage played Jon Voight’s son in National Treasure, and played Angelina Jolie’s boyfriend in Gone In 60 Seconds. So technically Nic Cage promotes incest.

Love,
Clint
